Rude to not have a vegetarian option?

Sarah, on July 19, 2019 at 8:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20
So we have 120 guests and I’ve never met about 15 of the guests on my fiancé’s side. He says he’s pretty sure a couple of them are vegetarian but he doesn’t know who or how many. We have a very tight budget and we were very excited to find a BBQ food truck for our reception. Would it be rude to not include a vegetarian option? For reference guests will have a choice of 2 meats and 2 sides. Side options are Coleslaw baked beans, green beans Mac n cheese potato salad pasta salad Potato chips. I plan to include all this info on my wedding website so guests will know the options. Is it rude to not include a vegetarian option? I’m just not sure what else to do!

I would put a spot on your invitations for dietary restrictions and if anyone says they’re vegan or vegetarian, accommodate their needs. To answer your question, yes, it would be rude not to provide a vegetarian option when you know you have vegetarian guests.

Can you ask your caterer if they have a vegetarian option? Or order something in for those guests who are vegetarian? I know a lot of times with bbq side dishes are cooked with meat so I worry there wouldn’t be much they could eat.

Our caterer is doing a roasted portabella mushroom as our vegetarian side at no additional cost, they said just let them know how many. They might offer something similar

I will ask the food truck if they do any vegetarian options but it’s a pretty small operation so I’m doubtful. My only RSVP option is online through wedding wire so I’m not sure how to ask about dietary accommodations other than directly asking the 15 people who might be. I guess if the food truck doesn’t offer a vegetarian option I could try to order a few meals from a restaurant or something.

You should definitely have an option for dietary restrictions on the rsvp so you know of any allergies etc. And yeah I would order in other meals. Our venue had to do that for kosher meals.

We added a note above the RSVP boxes to ask guests with any dietary restrictions to message us then added a "contact us" box underneath that.

I don't think it rude. I know lots of people would disagree we told folks with restrictions to feel free to bring something they can eat. Some folks in my family have restrictions by choice very few for medical purposes and it's not realistic for us to provide something for them all. And since there are non meat sides that your BBQ truck offers I don't think a special thing is necessary just do like someone said three sides rather than two.

It seems like you could just give them more of the sides? For instance I was considering a catering company that weirdly only allows you to choose one entree which would be a protein and a starch and a veggie side and they said for vegetarians they would just take away the protein and just put in more of the starch and veggie side to make a full entree.

Yes it would be rude. You can’t just bring good to venues. How will they heat it up? Find a caterer company that offers option 90 percent do. Think
of how you would ge eating a cheese sandwich while everyone has a steaming hot meal.

I’d ask the caterer. And let guest know.
If anyone has allergies it could be bad- especially if the ones who are vegan are like me... I cannot have dairy so can’t do the Mac & cheese, pickles would literally kill me so the potato salad and pasta salad is out. But knowing that I would double up on the items I could do, or bring my own, or est before hand.

We had a few guests with dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, shellfish allergies, and the unusual lactose-intolerant vegan. We had a buffet, which can be a landmine for anyone with dietary restrictions or special needs.

The chef worked with us to ensure that appropriate meals were prepared and plated for those guests. The individual who was lactose intolerant/vegan was served a tofu dish that she said was perhaps the best tasting meal she'd ever had at a wedding, and so appreciated that she was able to enjoy a full meal with everyone else. No pricing difference at all to have the special meals available.

Many good caterers have options - it's worth it to see what they can offer to you.

I personally think it's super rude to invite people to any sort of food based gathering and not make sure everyone can eat.
Also many caterers handle this all the time, especially as vegetarian diets are increasing in popularity, just ask the caterer.

I think it is best to talk to your caterer and have at least 2 vegetarian choices. Everyone needs to eat, right? So it's only best that everyone's dietary needs are considered. I'm sure most of your guests eat meat, but some don't and they need to be thought about too! Hope that helps out!!Smiley heart

As a former vegetarian, I never showed up to a wedding expecting to be catered to. As long as there are sides that are vegetarian (and the vegetarians can take bigger helpings), I was always satisfied with that. I do agree though with others that it doesn’t hurt to ask if there’s a vegetarian option.

I would definitely find out if there is vegetarian options available. For us we have several dietary restrictions. My FH and SIL are both gluten free. So it definitely makes a difference in the food options.
