Rustic Chic Nightmares

AMANDA, on September 29, 2018 at 1:09 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13
So I live here in San Antonio Texas and the rustic chic thing here is so embedded in the community that I feel like I cant get anyone (even my planner) on board with other options. All I keep hearing is how expensive flowers are for decor, which I totally dont care at all and really dont care about what decor is used as long as it isn't rustic chic. I'm actually so sick and tired of hearing that term that I'm literally having nightmares about it! I'm having a church wedding and hotel reception. The hotel is all taken care of pretty much on decor now....but ugh.... the church thing. Then I was talking today about a welcome sign and seating chart and the first thing that popped out was the chalkboard thing...and hey! Maybe a burlap bow. Is it wrong that I wanted to punch them in the face? I'm so sick of my MOH, planner and everyone in between on this kick. They even have FH ganging up on me when he never cared in the first place what the decor was. If it were up to him, my dress would be camo and we would hunt in the woods for a live kill and roast it over the fire and tell camp stories for my reception. I LOVE Texas, dont get me wrong.... but this has to stop! Anyone else dealing with something similar or am I being overly sensitive? No offense to the rustic brides out there by the way.... it is just SO not me. I'm more of the bling it all out....and white it all out "Russian style" bride.

I get it. I live in what's considered rural Oklahoma. My best friend is my MOH and I'm hers (she's getting married exactly 6 months after me!) I CANNOT get it through her head that we aren't really doing rustic. As soon as I mentioned turquoise she wanted to start painting mason jars and slapping burlap on everything. It's not even exactly turquoise. It's darker than that, but turquoise is the closest color than everyone would recognize. And it's more of a wood, lace and pearls vibe. No burlap. No sunflowers. And no, we're not wearing boots, even though we'll be outside. It's really frustrating to feel like people aren't actually listening to the words coming out of your mouth. Just stick to your guns. I've found that providing pictures helps. And if someone shows you something you aren't into, saying something like "that looks great, but I was thinking of something more like X" has helped a lot too.

I totally get it about the rustic thing! I'm having a hard time finding stuff that's boho, not rustic. I refuse to have any burlap, lace or mason jars anywhere near my wedding!!

Same......everyone keeps referring to my theme as rustic and it doesn’t help we live out in the country.....there will be no burlap, or yarn or sunflowers, or boots or country stuff. I have almost a white/romantic theme with lists of candles, white lights, white flowers, and really only color is the burgundy accents (bridesmaid dresses). Not in a barn, it’s in a lodge and the gazebo ceremony is right outside.

I haven’t discussed decor with too many people but my partner made it clear that he wants NO MASON JARS anywhere at the wedding. I don’t mind them but he hates them haha.

I guess I hadn’t thought of how hard it is to not follow a specific trend in certain areas of the country! Like PPs said, maybe provide lots of reference pictures to the people helping you with decorations. Whatever you go with for decor, I’m sure it will look beautiful and will be fitting to you guys rather than a current trend!

I’m from Pennsylvania and in the past two years every wedding I’ve been to was “rustic chic” mason jars everywhere, more burlap than I ever want to see in my life, sunflowers galore (I love sunflowers but not when they’re in a mason jar at a wedding.)

not my style at all, I like grays, blacks, navy blues, with decorations that look more sleek and elegant, even though I’m not exactly “elegant” lol. My MOH sends me all kinds of things on Pinterest (her wedding this past August was rustic chic) but nothing she sends me is really my style. I want a simple beach wedding with normal beach decor...not mason jars and burlap lol.

Oh my god I HATE the rustic look. Like, it’s cool for my kitchen, but not my wedding. And it’s so overused. Why would you want your wedding to look like everyone else’s? I refuse to have mason jars, burlap, or wood slice centerpieces.

Thank you guys so much! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!! Smiley heart Smiley heart Smiley heart

I had my Catering Coordinator say "Oh I get it Amanda. You want like a white, cold, sterile environment..." What?!!! Uh, no! I just dont want it to look like your grandmother's backyard thank you very much! @Chelsea I love that picture you posted!

I want it to be mostly white with touches of crimson everywhere (which is a deep red-also the color of my precious Oklahoma Sooners and my favorite color in the world!) Warm and inviting....not cold and sterile. They make me feel like I'm a snob because of my sytle... I'm so glad to see others share my struggle!

I personally see nothing wrong with the rustic look. It's whatever you want and like.

Hey Monique....there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. If you wanted me to wear a burlap bag to your wedding with a sunflower in my hair I would do it with a smile on my face and understand that was the look you desired. BUT... what happens when you tell me you want a rustic chic wedding and I present you with all decor that is a completely different style and insist that you are being a snob because you dont agree with my style for your wedding.....get it now?

Thank you for saying this hahaha, I don’t feel like people are pressuring me to be more rustic in my theme but all the decor I find seems to be that, and every wedding I see seems to follow that trend! It’s SO not me or my FH... we’re definitely more “fancy hotel with a ballroom” people than “rustic cabin in the woods” people lol.

One of my bridesmaids and her boyfriend are 2 of the most outdoorsy people I have ever met, and she was complaining to me about how if they get married she would really WANT a rustic-themed wedding because she feels like it is very “them,” but she feels as if it was ruined for people like them who actually ARE rustic-type people, by becoming a trend lol.

Not that anything is wrong with it I suppose, I just... don’t get why it’s SO popular!

No need to be rude. I was just saying there is nothing wrong with rustic chic. And I do GET it.
