Rustic DIY centerpiece ideas?

SewBikeLove, on December 27, 2015 at 11:21 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

The tables are large 72" and seat 10, so there is a big space to cover. I was thinking of using mason jars wrapped with burlap and lace, but the pint sized jar is too short. I am not sure if I should use floating candles in the jars or votive candles in each. Does anyone have any suggestions or pictures to share? I am kind of going with a rustic feel, burlap, lace, my bouquet will be a wildflower mix. I attached a picture of an idea I saw of what I was thinking of doing to fix the space problem. It will raise up the jars so the centerpieces look taller. Do you think using mason jars instead of the hurricane jars in the picture would look okay? Not sure if I should just drop the whole mason jar idea.

Mason jars are fine- they are extremely useful and possibly re-usable.

I have to agree with the burlap- I cringe every time I hear rustic- because usually it means burlap, and I dislike burlap. But it's not my wedding- i don't have to like it. If you love the look of burlap and lace- then go for it.

But- I think there are plenty of options with the use of tall medium and short jars or vases to create texture and take up space.

I would caution on "taller"- the problem with taller is then it's awkward to look around people- they either need to be well above seated eye level- or well below seated eye level. Honestly I would go for shorter rather than taller in this case also.

Our rustic centerpieces were wooden planter boxes that we made filled with flowers. I don't have a picture of it since we're still waiting on our pro pics (GRRR) but once I have those I could send a pic. We also used a lot of mercury glass and candles (dollar tree is your friend!). I'm not the biggest fan of burlap but to each their own!

One thing we did for the rehearsal dinner was take a lace curtain from IKEA and cut it into smaller pieces to make a lace runner for the tables. The curtains were like $10 and it gave us enough runners for the 5 round tables we had there - more affordable than renting/buying a lace runner outright.

I had burlap for my rustic wedding & loved it. I had burlap table runners with fabric doilies placed on them, mason jars, mismatched china, mismatched cake (each table had something different: cake, cheesecake, or fruit pizza), mismatched flowers in milk glass vases (30 different flowers with sunflowers as my main flower in my bouquet).

You could do different sized mason jars or different hurricane height jars. Each jar could be something different too if you'd like. A friend of mine used sugar inside of her centerpieces because it was cheaper than sand. I feel like as a centerpiece the hurricane jars would look a bit better. We only drank out of mason jars, not using them as centerpieces, and we married at a barn.

Thanks for the tips! I'll go with the hurricane jars and refrain from too much height! I used to word rustic because I am using some wood stumps, tin letters, vintage suitcases, marquee sign etc. These are all part of my style. Honestly I didn't realize how popular burlap was or unpopular. My sister used some burlap for her baby shower and I feel in love with the texture and color. Smiley smile

I don't have a lot to contribute to center pieces, but they make printed burlap as well that you can buy at joanns. It's a great visual texture, too. I've seen it with gold oils dots, keys, damask, and zig zags

Have you thought of the upside-down wine glasses? It's different, stands taller, and you can top them off with flowers, candles or whatever you want. Burlap is starting to drive me nuts personally, but it's your day. You make your dream wedding happen.

If you like burlap, go for it! It's your wedding Smiley smile wood rounds or planter boxes would be another good option, or they have wide mouth quart size mason jars that would be a mix between hurricanes and standard jars? I am doing a rustic/vintage theme too and have wood rounds, pinecones, and low milk glass vases for my centerpieces.

I'm not a fan of burlap, but I think layered lace would work well & still give that look you are going for.

I had 5in planter boxes with flowers in them. I kept them simple overall. I added touches of gold as well.

I was planning using lace runners but the venue didn't have the color tablecloths I wanted. Lace runners add a pretty touch though!

@Jackie, we are doing planter boxes filled with flowers too. How did you do yours ? Did you have a florist? I'm stuck on this and it has been the most frustrating thing about planning
