Rustic wedding: groomsmen attire jeans or suit?

desiree, on May 10, 2018 at 3:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 32
I am getting married September 8th of this year and the venue is a farm. We will be outside for the ceremony and the reception is in a barn strung with fairy lights and romantic flowers. i am struggling to decide what to have my FH & his GM wear. I know for my MOH and bridesmaids they will be wearing long chiffon gowns of their choosing in the apple color from David’s bridal. ( My colors are blush and burgundy with lots of greenery to tie in the rustic feel ) my FH along with his GM are country boys and I don’t mind the idea of the jeans and a dress shirt cause I know it is supposed to be cheaper and more comfortable but i want this so be rustic and elegant... just don’t want it to take a turn and be too backwoods cause at the end of the day it’s a wedding. My FH says he would like to dress up but he will wear whatever I would like so I’m asking if you did jeans can you upload a pic or if you did a country wedding with suits or just the dress pants and vests? I need ideas and advice please!

We are getting married at the end of this month. My FH and his groomsmen will be wearing dark jeans a white button down with a vest and tie. So relaxed , yet sort of dressed up.

My wedding sounds similar to yours... outdoorsy and rustic. FH said he'd like to a wear suit so this is what he is wearing. I think the blue is a little more casual than gray or black. Good luck!

If you are going for rustic elegant, don't do jeans. Nothing about jeans says elegant.

My wedding isn't rustic but it is more relaxed in attire. My FH and his GM are wearing black slacks, suspenders and bow ties. No jackets but still somewhat classy

I would suggest tan or navy suits over jeans.

I had this same problem! Our venue is a "barn" but obviously way nicer than a real barn. We are having a July wedding, so the guys are wearing cowboy boots, tan suits, and bolo ties! I think it looks country without looking not fancy enough. I think the groom will wear a full suit, with a jacket. Still struggling on the groomsmen, I'm thinking either full suit with jacket, just pants and vest, or just pants, button down, and suspenders.

I like these 3 examples which would work well in your style wedding. While I am generally a very casual person, I don't care for jeans at a wedding. I think it's a time where you want to look special, even if it's casual-special. I also think it would be too much of a contrast with the bridesmaids. Also, many men don't wear jeans that fit them properly (think "dad jeans") and it can look super sloppy real fast. I think something like the pictures would be a nice compromise.

We are having a similar wedding but at the end of September, FH and his groomsmen are still wearing tux's. Jeans would be a hard NO from me. I love the photo's above from @firstoneat56.

I personally prefer suits. I think if you are the BMs are going to be more formal (long dresses) then it only seems appropriate to have your FH and his GM match you for the same level of sophistication. You say you want rustic but, elegant...jeans are not elegant. Pinterest has lots of ideas for rustic wedding suits.

Thank you all so much for the input! Here are some pics with my color combo. I never even thought of the groom wearing the dress pants and vest and then the grooms men wearing dress pants with the suspenders. Such a good idea. Thank you so much!

Another thought. Is it wrong to do a bow tie instead of the traditional long tie? My FH has always done bow ties for prom and he looks so handsome in them

Jeans are not elegant. There are plenty of reasonably priced slacks in dark, neutral or khaki colors that will still be comfortable and will look 1000 times more put together, and sounds like he’s on board with that. I also think jeans would look very out of place next to long chiffon gowns. But there’s a lot in between jeans and a suit!
For our outdoors-beach-y wedding, FH is going with linen pants and vests. He might add a suit jacket— he was dead set on a suit (wears one every day so had trouble wrapping his head around dressing DOWN for the wedding) but after some convincing that it’s SUMMER, he got on board with looking for something nice and light and breathable. He’s going for a linen in a charcoal gray, but was also eyeing a nice light blue color, so don’t think linen always has to be ...linen colored!
vests or suspenders also easily class up a really simple look, without going too formal/stuffy/uncomfortable for your country boys

Just my opinion but I don’t thing you should do jeans. Maybe some casual dress pants in tan or blue with button downs and suspenders. Don’t have to do a full suit.

Not at all! I’ve also seen a number of wedding parties where the groomsmen wear long ties but the groom wears a bow tie to stand out. Super classy!

Thanks! I have just been given a lot of grief from my FMIL and sister in law ( her husband is my FH brother and he is in the wedding obvi ) about wanting to do dress pants instead of jeans saying I’m asking too much and just to do wranglers but my FH is wanting to look his best and made the comment that he can’t look nicer at our prom than he does at our wedding. My biggest worry is doing the suit jackets. I guess we will see what we come up with at our men’s wharehouse appt.

Your FH could wear a jacket and the groomsmen a vest. There is no rule that the groom can't be better dressed. If he wears a suit it will better match the level of formality of your dress.

I don't particularly like the high contrast with the choice of light suit. I would choose the same or darker grey.

HI Desiree, the theme and imagery you have described for your wedding sounds really cool. Jeans can fall very differently on different gents and the novelty can wear off quickly ( Post ceremony).

Here are some great rustic groomsmen Ideas from WeddingWire. If you are gonna stick with denim- I personally like the denim top idea.

But also, consider throwing in some tweed- casual, country and rustic... but elegant.

I totally understand the rustic barn theme and how the jeans correlate. But I think once you start talking about elegant and your girls wearing long chiffon dresses then the jeans idea should be tossed out the window. If you really want the jeans idea for your men then maybe switch from long dresses to short dresses and cowboy boots for your girls.

I just saw a rustic wedding on another site I’m on. And the groom and grooms men were wearing nice jeans with a belt. And a nice white shirt with vest and tie. And I honestly loved it. & this is coming from a girl doing a black tie city wedding lol
