Sam's Club or Walmart cake

Trish, on July 31, 2016 at 1:37 AM Posted in Planning 1 37

Cakes bought from traditional cake makers are so expensive. I was thinking of going to Sam's or Walmart. The thing is, I'm not sure how much extra they will do to the cake as far as decoration. They also don't deliver. Any suggestions on getting an inexpensive cake like the one in the picture? I live in Virginia Beach area.

Someone I work with recently got married and got her cake from a grocery store called Festival. She was only able to get a sheet cake instead of a tiered cake. The cake in your pic looks pretty intricate and will probably take a lot of time to make, so something like that may be hard to find at a low price. How inexpensive are you thinking?

This was a cake my close friend had at our wedding and it was from Walmart. It also came with a large sheet cake. It was a pretty cute cake. I know she also brought in fake flowers and they just set them up on top how she wanted it to be. Overall it was inexpensive and no one complained about it.

It looks like Sam's can do some design work and I'm sure the cakes are as delicious as any bakery.

The picture you provided is going to be an expensive cake. You can do similar things, but making a cake like that takes skill, so being realistic here...you can get a cake you like, but probably not that one on a small budget.

I'm in VB too. Maybe try your luck with the bakery at Farm Fresh and add the fresh flowers yourself or have your florist add them??

I also work in advertising and cold called a business a few weeks ago called Flour Child Bakery. She's a one woman operation and since I already have my wedding cake vendor Im going to order a grooms cake through her for the rehearsal. I saw some of her work and it was good. She was super sweet on the phone and seemed like she will be easy to work with. Might be worth reaching out to her for a quote

How much are you looking to spend? We spent around 500 on both the wedding cake and grooms cake i don't believe cake is something you should skimp on i would do a lot of shopping around to find someone in your price range you also need to make sure to find out if they use fondant or not. I know a lot of people who despise fondant and wont eat cake if its on there ours is a buttercreme that has the look of fondant.

We are getting ours from Publix since we don't need a huge cake (it's only going to need to feed 20 people max) and they quoted us a 2-tier 8x6 cake for like 130 bucks or something (side topic-do you really need to save the top tier? We're debating not getting one since we would have to travel 8 hours home with it after the wedding) and they offer tastings. But anyway if you have one I'd suggest calling them.

Thanks for your tips everyone. Unfortunately the closest Publix to me is 3 hours away. I'm not trying to spend any more than $300 on my cake. Half the people won't even end up eating it anyway.

Make sure your vendor will allow cakes from a grocery store. Mine would not. They had to be licensed. I recommend having all the decorations as not edible and trying to get one as simple as possible. I'm in Dallas, TX, and eventually broke the budget to get the cake I wanted. I had the same budget as you and realized I would be sad without my cake. Spent $550. Good luck!

    I will say:

    A. You get what you pay for

    B. Not all cakes are created equally.

Most Sams Club or WalMart cake decorators will not have the skill set that a professional bakery/cake decorator will have. BUT I have met some phenomenal grocery store decorators, so if the quality of the decorations is that important to you, maybe shop around wherever you can afford.

Grocery stores such as walmart, safeway, ect. Do not bake their own cakes they are premade frozen cakes that they decorate. Keep that in mind when picking where to get your cake from.

I was originally going to go with sams club until I found out the prices for hyvee cakes. They actually do all the baking in house and have phenomenal decorators. For a little more we got more flavor options and better quality. I say look at local grocery stores, a lot of them still have bakeries. You have plenty of time to do the research

I'd deff suggest SAMs club. Their cakes are awesome. They're (almost) as good as Publix's cakes. Almost.

The cake in your picture is an expensive cake. You get what you pay for.

Take the picture to a local bakery and see what they will charge. Perhaps if you dial back on the design a bit, you will end up with a lovely cake that doesn't sacrifice taste.

I was required to use my caterer for my cake bc she's traveling 2 hours for a 60-70 person event but if I hadn't had to use her then I would've used SAMs club. Their cakes taste good & they can't do tiered cakes for a great price.

It's expensive to deal with 800 pound gorillas who aim to put out the independent business by luring people in with low price....and after the fact you will see the skill sets don't match up to the local provider.
