Satin or grosgrain ribbon?

Michelle, on November 30, 2016 at 2:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I'm changing the ribbon out on my belt for a different color, and am deciding on what type of ribbon. Most seem to be satin, but I've seen a few grosgrain that seem pretty, too. Any input?

This is all personal preference. And also depends on what your dress looks like.

Personally, I hate satin. Something about it and the shinyness screams "cheap" to me so if it were me, I'd go grosgrain.

Like I said it depends though, because if you have a really blinged out dress, grosgrain might look odd next to it..

Thank you guys! I am doing a more casual, slightly rustic thing. My dress is a simpler all lace sheath/trumpet. I'm kind of digging the different look of the grosgrain.

With your gown, I think the grosgrain would be a better accessory than satin. Actually, I think it would be perfect.

@Boozy, I like you, I've always thought your advice to be intelligent and spot on, however, when I state my preference for something I usually don't insult the opposite thing while doing so. Your personal preference is fine, your statement about the 'why' essentially insults about 50% of the brides here who have chosen their satin wedding dress as THE dress. Standing before a mirror feeling beautiful in their satin wedding dress, paying a fortune for one piece of clothing, accessorizing it lovingly, wearing it glowingly on their one day, and feeling like a million bucks, nothing could be further from 'cheap'.

Words have power. Words are powerful. Words have moved people to do amazing things and to do preposterous things for thousands of centuries. You know words have power, I've read your thoughtful or thought provoking comments, so one could say your statement was made knowingly to offend. Words are power. Choose carefully, or carelessly. It is always your preference.

For the record, my Pronovias satin wedding dress wasn't cheap. And it fucking did not scream 'cheap' when I walked down the aisle--I looked like a fucking million bucks.

No one is going to notice or care. At all.

    Seriously.

    It's such a miniscule detail.

Mine was grossgrain and you can't tell. I'm quite positive no one thought my event was rustic.

@Kari: Ummm, I agree with @Boozy. I also have a satin wedding dress.

Guess what? Bridal satin, unless we're talking the monstrosities from the 80's and 90's, are a matte satin, and ribbon is made from a smooth satin, frequently (but erroneously) referred to as silk satin.

Silk satin wrinkles easily, is highly reflective/shiny, and generally DOES look cheap. It is also frequently very flimsy and pulls easily and horribly, because guess what? It is almost always cheap. It also, due to its high shine, tends to look abhorrent on nearly every body type, even the skinniest of people.

Bridal/matte satin however, is a beautiful fabric with a soft sheen, a sateen like finish (though it is not sateen, as sateen is a type of finish for cotton, while satins are only available on fibers such as polyester, rayon, and silk), a much heavier, elegant drape, and exudes a feel of luxury. It resists wrinkles, has a much softer tactile feel, flatters most body types, and produces a luminescence in the clothing created from it.

There is a world of difference, and I feel quite sure, since the discussion was about ribbon, which is ALWAYS silk satin, her comment had ZERO to do with actual wedding dresses.

Words have power. So does knowledge. If you can't look at your satin dress and a satin ribbon and see the glaring difference between the two fabrics, then I really don't know what to tell you.

Any who... Thanks Ashley. Smiley smile

And Jo, I'm not so concerned about what everyone else thinks, just how I want it to look. Smiley smile I like the details!

    Michelle, I LOVE your dress!!

Just a heads up, I went to a wedding this year where the bride wore a very similar dress. She had no bustle, her dress was a little long, and her lace was pretty filthy and gray on the bottom three or four inches. It was noticeable enough that my now husband even noticed, and he's maybe the least observant person alive. Make sure it's hemmed to the perfect length!

Thanks Starkey! It is already the perfect length luckily, and I am DEFINITELY getting it bustled! I don't want to be dragging it and tripping over it. It's a must. Thanks for the tip!

It's the littlest detail. And it doesn't matter. At all. Just pick one.

This is the kind of question that starts to snow ball for no reason.

    Is just a ribbon.

And calm your tits other pp. Everyone knows satin can have a look. That cheap and very 1982 feel.

    Boozy didn't say anything absurd.

There are many satin gowns that aren't even useful to be recycled. They look cheap and garish.

And then there are stunning amazing gowns, I think tacocat a had a pleated satin. It is absolutely stunning

    .

Fuck my dress was cheap poly satin I'm sure and still looked nice (didn't feel good but it looked good)

I wasn't offended. Satin can look like shit. Even some satin wedding dresses.

Boozy wasn't making fun of anyone's gown. Lay off it.
