No way! Our baker (and most in our area) will provide us a cake free of charge on our first anniversary to enjoy.

Absolutely not. That tradition is from the days when wedding cake was fruit cake. Yes the stuff you give at Christmas. It was intended to be saved for the birth of the first child 9 months later. Cake ingredients that are used today are not intended to be frozen even one day. Many people who have eaten year old frozen (modern) cake say it is beyond inedible, even giving them food poisoning no matter how tightly it is wrapped.

Most bakers offer a free anniversary tier that is fresh. Also couples serve the top tier at the reception or take it to the hotel as a midnight snack after

My cake was so good, it would have never made it to the freezer had I planned to keep it. LOL! Needless to say, I didn't keep it and am looking forward to a free fresh cake on my anniversary.

I've only heard of one bakery around me doing this... but sounds like it's worth asking our bakery! And I'm glad to hear people aren't actually doing this... I can barely fit things in my freezer now, I can't imagine shuffling around a tier of cake for a year. Smiley xd

My SIL did this and her cake was absolutely horrible after 1 year in the freezer.

Saving the top tier of our cake was definitely a mistake that we made. We ate it after only 3 months because we ran out of freezer space and it tasted icky. Luckily we asked our baker to make a replica of our top tier for our anniversary and he did. That was so much better! I would not recommend saving the top tier

For someone that has stomach issues I refuse to save it for that long. My party is now April and my 1 Year is 8/8/21. So it’s not really that long but ugh no thanks. Lol

Eeek!! No, no, no! I've had some family members who did this and it always turned out looking inedible even though it was in the freezer lol. Smiley xd

No we won’t be. I think this is a thing that is slowly fizzling out with time.

We did! I ate one bite of it on our first anniversary. My husband ate the entire remaining part because he thought it was still really good even a year later. However, he eats just about anything so I really shouldn't have been that surprised.

We were going to. I like the tradition of it, but now you all have been second guessing this decision. Nobody has time for food poisoning! lol

Our baker provided us a with a separate tier, prepacked in a freezer-friendly box. We then wrapped it, as well, and stashed it.

Moved it to the fridge a few days before our anniversary, and it was ready to go by the date.

    Tasted AMAZING.

But, your baker has to know what they are doing.

(Food poisoning only happens *if you don't have it packed correctly*... which it seems like a lot of people do.)

This. It's perfectly fine to do this, but your baker has to know what they're doing lol. We've had plenty of family and friends save the top tier and they all said it tasted amazing! It all comes down to whether or not it's packed correctly.

We wanted to save ours, but our baker only does 2 tier cakes, which is fine since that's what we wanted lol. So we're just going to ask her if she can make a replica of the top tier for us on our first anniversary!

We originally wanted to go traditional and save the top tier for our anniversary. However since our wedding will be outside in the heat and humidity of August and at our house, we are doing a faux cake that will be made out of styrofoam and fondant. There will be a tiny section with cake for us to feed each other and get pictures of us cutting the cake. We will have sheet cakes in the fridge. And when our anniversary comes the bakery will make a small cake that was the exact same style and flavor of our wedding cake and we will eat that.
