Save the dates- necessary or not?

Taylor, on December 8, 2019 at 8:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
I love the idea of sending save the dates. My fiancé and I got engagement photos done a few weeks ago and they turned out really well. We have a rather low budget for our wedding so we are trying to cut costs where we can. Should we send save the dates? Are they a waste of money? Will it look tacky if we don't?

Save the dates are actually not too high of a cost in terms of a wedding budget. I ordered my STDs during a sale and only additional cost is postage. You could also look into e-vites such as paperless post to cut costs more.

The issue is if you don't send save the dates people will not be able to know well in advance to take time off for your wedding, especially if you have a lot of out of town guests. & you don't want to send invitations out too early, it makes it more likely you'll have to track down more people to RSVP.

It's good so friends and family can get it on their calendars. Invites technically don't go out until 6-8 weeks before the wedding, so with the save the dates you're giving them a heads up well in advance.

You can buy a cheap template and design your own and print them out to cut costs. A lot of websites will offer pretty good discounts. We got our through Vistapint, but Shutterfly is good as well.

We have a lot of out of town guests so we opted to send them out so they can try to get the best possible deals on airfare! I got ours at Walgreens. With 60% off they were about $26 for 80 cards. The postage was about $40, so about $66 to send them total! Costco has some great deals, but I didn’t like the designs as much, and with the 60% off Walgreens worked just fine.

We didn't send Save the Dates to save some money and it was fine! It's totally fine to skip them

They are totally optional! But personally I am sending some. I actually am using our engagement photos for save the dates instead of on our invites (I want a really simple, classic, plain wedding invite). It gives people a heads up in advance about the wedding if they’re not your super close friend or family that knows the date for sure. Like everyone else said it’s just to give people a heads up if they plan their vacations or what have you in advance. You can actually get them for pretty cheap (I did mine at through Walgreens photo for $40). They also have e-save the dates sent online that are budget friendly. But again, totally optional.

I spent about $40 total on ours! We printed ours through Costco so it was really cheap! I’d also say, only send them to the people on your list that are really important, like family and close friends!

If you have access to Sam's club save the dates are 10$ per 25. If you sign up for emails through Shutterfly and leave stuff in your cart a few days they send a 50% off coupon via email and they come out to .70 or less an piece.

GREAT idea! Especially if it around a holiday, bad weather in area marrying, people have to travel and or it’s a destination wedding.

You can get cute little invites from the Dollar Tree- as in blank note cards that you can hand write the info in: “SAVE THE DATE! We are getting MARRIED! September 19, 2020” Stamp and send!

It is good to send the save the dates bc you will let your guests know in advance about your wedding. They have time to save the date In advance and plan around it so they can attend your wedding

My fiance and i went back and forth on them for a while, as well. We don't have many out of town guests, so we figured word of mouth would be good enough. However, then i found a great sale on Walgreens and i got all my STD's for $25. Also depends on how many people you're inviting, it does help with most of our guests being couples so we only have to send one (since they live together). It's all up to you. My wedding is in Oct, which is a popular wedding month so I want to make sure everyone is aware with plenty of time to plan.

Most of our guest are from out of town so we had to do it. We wanted to make sure that they consider flights, hotel, and car rental (on base, no uber / lyft). I found discounts for vista print which did make it cheaper.

They aren't required & it's not tacky if you don't send them. I always prefer them so we have more notice though.

I don't think they're really necessary. Especially with the age of tech where if you did want to send them, you can do it through an email

They totally optional! I sent mine in November, I got them on sale from Shutterfly. A lot of the big companies are running sales for the holidays, and you could always get Christmas cards and make them a combo Christmas Card/Save the Date (as those will get more discounted as the season goes on!)

I chose not to do them. I personally think they're a waste of money, but i'd never tell another bride what to do. I chose to use the money on things I found to be more important. What I did do was create a Facebook event page as a sort of "save the date" thing. It would out better than I could have hoped for anyway, and the guests appreciated being kept in the loop about the planning
