Absolute need to have! Weddings are expensive and time-consuming even if you’re just attending as a guest—you should give your guests as much time to make arrangements as possible, especially if they have to travel from out of town.

I think normally they're nice to have. but any travel involved (our of state or destination) i think you need it to give guests plenty of notice in advance.

Need to have. Almost all of our family is coming from out of state, so I wanted to give enough time for travel arrangements.

It's nice to do to ensure the head count is accurate. However, we don't until say about 90 days prior to the day

I think save the dates are only necessary if you plan on having a long engagement, I would say about a year or longer. Personally, my engagement is only about 6 months, so I did not send out save the dates since the invites would be going out very soon. So, I guess it just depends on how long your engagement is!

Nice to have. I wasn't planning on doing them but ended up making them myself because I thought it would be nice for people to have a heads up for when the date was.

I'm kind of middle ground here... I don't necessarily think they're essential, especially if word of mouth gets out and people know your wedding date way in advance. But, I think they're super nice to have! They're great especially for older people or people who don't go online much. We didn't have Save the Dates, but only because we got married in an 8 week time frame so they were totally unnecessary for us. My husband found out he was going to be getting deployed. We had been dating for 8 years at that point and had already talked about marriage and knew we wanted to get married. So I made sure it happened before he left. Because of our short time-frame, Save the Dates weren't necessary.

    Nice to have.

We won't even need them. I have one person from abroad who I may invite, and I can just as easily text her the details.

For me, they were a need to have. I live in a different state as all my family. so they were all going to have to travel. so i wanted to give them notice in advance.

Not necessary, but if you have a destination wedding or have a majority of guests that have to travel far, -- that takes planning! They are recommended. Mine were right at $100 for 105 on Shutterfly, so they aren't that expensive.

I see them more as a need to have if you know your people/guests are those super planners that may book things and then be like oh I wish I’d known your date earlier or I wouldn’t have planned this thing that I can’t get out of now. I’m a trail runner, and we start filling up our race calendar a year in advance or at least a season in advance. I’ve registered for races 10 months ahead of time to get the best price and well then there’s no getting out of it without forfeiting my money.
