Saving wedding dress after the wedding?

Nicole, on October 29, 2019 at 12:50 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 10
Is anyone saving (preserving) their wedding dress after the wedding? Why did you choose to? I’ve seen some preservation kits and wondering if it’s worthwhile. We’re short on money so we are selling essentially everything, and I could probably make the most $$$ selling the dress. I’m worried I may regret it. Thoughts?

    Fat fingers.
my question is, preserve for what purpose? To sit in a closet for 30 years? To pass down to future daughters or for grandkids’ christening dresses. Me, I have no kids and no interest in it taking up space in my closet, so I’ll be selling it.

Mine is being preserved right now. I had it sent off to be cleaned and preserved because 1- I love my wedding dress! 2- I wore it on the best day of my life. 3- I paid a lot of money for my dress. 4- I don't know why anyone would want to buy my used wedding gown... when I would much rather save it to keep as a memory of a day I will cherish forever. I'm also having my bouquet preserved. What is the point of paying for and having a wedding with all of these things if you are just going to get rid of them after?

I agree it depends on what your intentions are regarding the dress. If you hope to sell it, then I think you definitely have to have it cleaned. However, I'd do some research first to get an idea of how much you're likely to get for your dress resale, and decide if it's worth the cost of dry cleaning. There are lots of posts on WW from brides who struggle to sell brand new/unaltered dresses because of "dress regret" that they cannot sell for anywhere close to what they paid. If you're talking about cleaning and preserving it to save for whatever purpose, again, depending on the cost of the dress originally, I'd consider the options. I believe David's has a cleaning process that is often on-sale for $100. I've read mixed-reviews of the quality of the work, but if you just want it clean enough to stick in a closet forever it's probably fine. I'm not sure what daughter's long-term plans are for her dress (she's talked about she and SIL putting her dress/his suit on for their anniversary each year, just as a tradition), but she shopped around and found an independent dry cleaner with good reviews. I think she paid about $175 to have it cleaned and packed in a preservation box (which I think is relatively low for our area).

I chose to preserve my dress. If I choose to sell it at a later date then it will still be in good condition to sell. I also only wore it one day. I would love to hand it down to a potential daughter/daughter in law someday.

I know the likelihood of a potential daughter is slim when it comes to wedding dress styles in the future, but I plan to keep mine in the event I do have a daughter. I would like to get a couple of newborn photos with her and the dress. I am more a sentimental type person, so the idea of letting go of my dress is a bit hard for me.. so we will see how long I end up keeping it.

I preserved mine & we are going to put it in a framed shadow box, then hang it in our closet (folded in half - not a full size dress frame). My mom kept hers & my grandmothers, and my MIL kept hers. My MIL gifted me a cuff with pieces of her dress on it, I put it around my bouquet. It was super special and I'm a sentimental person, so I'm happy they saved it! My mom is going to use the rest of her dress & her mother's to make christening dresses for our future kids.

I'm also super sentimental so I'm saving it...just not the traditional way...

I'm planning on turning my dress into a cocktail dress that I can wear for other special events or just a nice dinner out. I'll dye it a different color so it doesn't scream bridal. The rest of the lace from my dress will be going to a few different crafty projects. I considered selling it, but I know I'll never get anywhere near what I paid for it (even though it wasn't that expensive.) I can't justify the closet space for it to just hang in there. And I can't have kids so there's no reason to save it for a future offspring (not that children even wear their parents wedding gowns anymore...)
