sax and percussion with DJ

lauren, on April 9, 2010 at 7:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Has anyone been to a wedding with a sax and percussion accompanying the DJ? Is it too much or does the sax/percussion blend nicely with the DJ's music?

This one has red flags all over it. As a sound engineer, I would say there's a few elements that jump out at me. First, the volume of drums is usually loud enough to drown just about everything. If it's not carefully done, the sax won't be heard.

Second, if the sax and drum players have not worked worked together, it's going to be tough. They need to be in absolute sync, and the sax needs to be amplified.

Third, if the DJ has no live-sound experience, I would venture to say you're going to get some horrible feedback. Probably not what you want to provide for your guests.

Most DJ's are probably not equipped to deal with live sound, as they've only ever worked with pre-recorded music. Most DJ equipment is not meant for live sound.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I think live music is great. This might work out great for a couple of songs, but I have a feeling it's going to get "old" after a few songs. Unless, of course, you're a big fan of Kenny G!

Thanks for your feedback. I booked it with a highly reputable DJ on LI so I am hoping it will all sound ok together. If I change my mind and just have the percussion I'm wondering if the DJ lets you cancel (the sax) and how long in advance. I saw this mix at a bridal showcase and thought it sounded great and added a different touch. Just hope that they all work well together, like you said. And that it wont be "too" overbearing.

If they're used to working together, it might be fine. Do they have a recording or a video you could listen to/look at?

Thanks for the reply Jambalaya! Smiley smile

As mentioned before, this DJ company is very well known, so I'm hoping they would have been honest when booking if they thought the mix of all three would be too much. They said it will sound complimented so I pray that it will all work out!

I can view their live players on the website. I first got the idea at a bridal showcase back in the fall. However, it was another DJ company that performed...but it gave me the idea to try something different for a "unique" music feel/vide to the room.

If it's something they've done before, and you've seen it in person (even if it's with somebody else) then go for it! Smiley smile

You may choose to hire sax with percussion. It does make a huge difference. Do not just book anyone, the wrong sax player or percussionist can ruin your event. There are musicians who do not know how to control their volume levels, they naturally play way too loud or too soft and they are annoying. Some other problems occur when a DJ company who knows nothing about live music uses the wrong gear and get the wrong sound. Choose a people who have done this thousands upon thousands of times and do it the right way. Sax Man Dan LLC working with Entertainment Makers is not just DJ video lighting company but headed by a pro musician with sound engineering skills. The sax will sound smooth processed correctly like Kenny G but and at times strong like Clarence Clemons. The Latin percussion will sound like a concert but not overbearing. Each of those drums is positioned & microphones proffesional in such a way providing clear stereo sound. Our musicians have high energy and eagerness to involve guests, we always uplift the event and make people happy.

The saxophone can be lots of fun for your guests. Just look how involved people become.
