Sci-Fi Themed Wedding

aspiecat, on July 9, 2013 at 6:43 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 25

My fiancé and I are geeks. I mean, REALLY geeky geeks. Talking about science, history, politics...that gets us all excited LOL. Since our biggest geek-outs are about sci-fi, we want a sci-fi themed wedding, with some steampunk/fantasy thrown in.

I have already shocked one bridal store consultant by saying, "Hmmm...I like this dress, and can imagine the flowers on the lace being replaced by little Starship Enterprises or TARDISes" LOL. She was horrified, to say the least!

We are hoping to have a Dr Who wedding cake, and my FH's and son's coats will be rather like that worn by Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock (BBC mini-series version). I have Star Trek cufflinks for them as well, and matching earrings for me (no bridal party, I am not represented by anyone apart from my young teen son).

Any ideas for a sci-fi themed wedding?

Bad Wolf (A recently married bride on here) had an awesome Dr. Who wedding. She DIYed her centerpieces and had Dr. Who touches throughout.

Here's a link to her back and married post. https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/back-from-my-vegas-wedding-and-honeymoon-pic-heavy/1d840283bdd625c7.html

I would check out OffbeatBride.com for some ideas - they have had a lot of Dr. Who and Sci-fi & "Geek" weddings in their wedding porn section.

I'm with Candida!!! I'm thinking of surprising fh with a Star War theme!!! Well, the reception, lol...although our officiant said he'd dress up, so I wonder if I paid for the rental if he'd dress up as Darth Vader ;-)

What about Dune? Hyperion? Ender's Game? But to be honest, whatever you choose pick one to do a theme on, otherwise things get get confusing and convoluted. Is there one Sci-Fi book/show/movie that you guys like?

I'm going to surprise FH with a replica of Link's sword to cut the cake with Smiley smile But, there are a million and one different replicas, so you could do your own favorite (LoTR is particularly popular!) .

Rev. Ann, I'm jealous -- my weddings are either formal or beachy. Have not had a sci-fi, geek wedding yet!

You could do something with each table. Like a different sci-fi show themed on each table. Or like different crew if you stuck with one show. You could have different "Captain" Tables. like Picard, Kirk, Janeway etc..

You could have little have little ship emblems (or the old communicators )on ribbons around candle holders. or emblems from any of the shows/books you like.

A Sherlock scavenger hunt, hmmm. There are so many ways you could go. xD

I think that you should choose a Sci-Fi genre/show and stick with it rather than going all over the place. Me and my hunni love Sci-Fi too...As well as all things Marvel and Anime. That isn't our wedding theme...But, if we were to do something along those lines, I would choose a series and run with that.

Dr. Who and Sherlock Holmes could both lend you lovely Victorian themes with awesome period pieces mixed with quirk.

Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica could all be wonderful fantasy weddings...

I just think (and this is my total humble opinion, at the end of the day it is YOUR big day) that you should narrow it down a bit and focus on details that make it cohesive.

    Fiona-

I have done several sci-fi weddings the past couple of years. I suggest using your DJ to maximize the music and sounds throughout the ceremony and reception.

For example, one wedding used the end music of a New Hope for the recessional and then when they entered for their GE I played the Imperial March. Other weddings I have used the red alert and hailing sounds from ST, the BG theme, and various snippets from Princess Bride as well as Mark K's theme song for the processional. Last Saturday, while not a sci-fi wedding per se, the couple had a zombie cake and right after they cut it we went into an amazing Thriller danceoff. Other weddings have used themes from Indiana Jones, 2010, and even the song from Southpark's "Fun with Weapons" for the garter removal.

In other words, be creative! Okay you already are... Let me rephrase that: make your vision a reality & have a wedding and reception that really screams "you". Even your squarest guests will appreciate that... GL & HF!

Mine isn't Sci-Fi themed but there will definitely be hints of Dr. Who... I'm stealing a bit of Gallifreyan handfasting wording in the ceremony, there may or may not be bowties, and my something blue will be TARDIS converse. Smiley smile

Don't forget to look for stuff on ThinkGeek! And use 8bit music when appropriate! Though I can't explain to you when that might be.

I've seen a few steampunk bouquets on etsy too.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

There are lots of great ways to tie in the sci-fi themes. Covering your dress with things might make it look less like a wedding dress and more like a costume though. If that's what you're going for then go for it! But if not, it might be better to keep the sci-fi to the decor.

What about panting lanterns like the TARDIS and putting candles inside for the centerpieces? Glowing TARDIS!

Thank you EVERYONE for such wonderful responses and suggestions! I am as creative as a baked bean (and the bean has an edge on me LOL) but I see things and go hmmm that looks like a good idea.

Here is my wedding board from Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/aspiecat/a-geeks-wedding/

We aren't having a reception per se, so a DJ will not feature, I don't think. My FH has a condition that means he cannot be out and about longer than a couple of hours at a time, so we're having about a four-hour break between the ceremony and whatever reception we DO have. Dancing will not feature, either. We probably won't even have more than 30 guests, maybe less, as I won't have anyone there on my side (apart from my teenage son, who I just asked a few minutes ago if he would give me away...he almost cried, the lovely thing), and FH's side will only be extended family as he can't think of anyone he'd want there.

So all in all it's not a regular wedding, but FH wants it to be special for me.

I went to Oz Comic Con with my son this past weekend and got myself a TARDIS blue corset, which looks AMAZING. I am thinking of incorporating that with my dress, which, I should add, I haven't chosen yet as my FMIL may well be making my dress - she's incredible.

This is the jacket I suggested to my FH and my son for the wedding. They both like it as it is a shorter version, in their view, to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock's coast...
