Script vs Calligraphy

RAG, on May 19, 2017 at 8:30 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

I know people who do their own Calligraphy or pay someone to do it but can I just write the invitations in script? Is that weird?I have great handwriting especially in script. I really would like to do handwritten ones instead of printing on the envelopes.

I'm sure with practice I could do Calligraphy I'm just a little lazy. Lol

We're just writing ours in script. Honestly the envelope just gets thrown away by the recipient, so it's probably nothing to worry too much about.

This is my handwriting. I think with a better pen and taking more time to write in a straight line lol it would come out nice

I have great handwriting, and I just wrote mine myself. I don't think people care that much anyway.

I've been slowly handwriting the invitations. I don't think anyone really looks at it and didn't want to spend extra money on labels, calligraphy, etc. FMIL did offer to pay for calligraphy but that felt too fancy for the invitations which are more casual looking.

You've got beautiful handwriting! Just be sure to take lots of breaks and give yourself plenty of time.

I printed all our envelopes in a fancy font, and then traced over the letters with a gold pen, so they look hand-written. Took me about 10 minutes per envelope! But it was worth it for me.

If your own script is that nice you don't need to pay anyone else, plus it's a personal touch that you took the time for each guest's invitation. As a guest I would appreciate that more than professional calligraphy.

You could get one of those line guides as I would imagine your hand will get tired, but your writing is lovely.

I wrote mine out in block lettering. My caps print is good, plus it's easier on the post office.

Even though I'm a calligrapher, I want to say, if you can write neatly, it's fine to address your own envelopes. Just so you're aware, calligraphers offer many different writing styles to complement a casual or formal invitation suite. Once you do begin addressing your own, you may understand the cost of hiring a calligrapher, it's time consuming. The only thing I don't agree with is when people say their guests will just throw away their envelopes. I can't see how they would throw away an envelope personalized in beautiful writing and maybe even in a shiny ink. If they do throw it away, they'll probably be throwing away your invitation too.

I hand addressed our STDs and invitations, in different styles. Calligraphy is really beautiful, but it wasn't in our budget. A lot of people actually asked if we had them printed and were surprised when I said I did them myself.

You have great writing, just do it. With a thicker pen it will look like calligraphy. Mine isn't as nice, but isn't aweful so I'm handwriting, I've started addressing them, a few at a time.

I'm handwriting all of mine including return envelopes in gold ink. But only the first addressed line will be in script, the rest will be in print.

I don't see a problem with doing it yourself just know it takes FOREVER. Get a lettermate to keep the lines straight, get a good pen, and just go for it.

I would recommend just writing the name in your script font. The lowercase letters look like they would run together and make it hard for the post office.

That's a great idea. I wanted our vowels in calligraphy however, the price was ridiculous. If you can do it go for it!

I just wrote out my invitations in my basic handwriting with a basic pen. I actually bought a calligraphy pen with the intent to learn and write in calligraphy but *nope* my regular handwriting looked way better than whatever I was trying to do lol.

FMIL has great penmanship and said she'd do our invites which was a plus but I really love the idea of what @bookcasehat did! Could you post a picture?
