Scuba!

NextChapterReady, on July 3, 2019 at 10:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

So for our honeymoon, we're going to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia for the first week! We are getting ready to take the scuba certification for open water diving. We just did all of the online education and we'll have to take a swim test (10 minutes treading water, swim 450 meters, and swim 20 meters holding your breath). We will be NAUI certified.

My FH was certified but needed the refresher course. I have never done snorkeling or scuba. Is it scary? How difficult is it? How hard was the swim test and course? Looking for some fellow divers to reassure me! Smiley smile

Is your first scuba experience going to be in the GBR?

I am not a diver but I was just curious.

I went snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef years ago. BEAUTIFUL! Such a great experience! I love the water so I wasn't worried about any type of tests. I think as long as you feel comfortable performing the requirements, you'll be ok.
Unfortunately, I didn't go diving so I'm not able to speak on that.

That is so cool! What a great way to start scuba diving!

I've been scuba diving for the last 11 years and it is actually how my fiance proposed! I absolutely love the feeling of being underwater. I don't find it scary, and didn't when I first started. I think that is because I have always felt comfortable swimming/being in water and that I learned with a great instructor and had people I trusted with me.

I am PADI certified but the swim test wasn't difficult in my eyes, and the instructors want you to pass so they are there to help and give tips. The course itself is informational and important to know, as long as you pay attention you should be fine.

If you have time, I would recommend going to the swimming pool or ocean if you have one nearby and spend some time getting comfortable in the water.

Trust your instructors and have fun! If you feel nervous or scared just take it slow and be vocal so they can help.

Great way for you and your fiance (husband at that point!) to bond and have fun together.

    Congrats and have fun!

Thank you for sharing your experience! Our cert will be NAUI. We actually own a deep swimming pool, so I'm lucky enough to get to practice there every day! Smiley smile

Thanks for the advice! Smiley smile
