'Scuse me..There's a bug in my soup! (NWR)

Rubylee, on April 7, 2012 at 3:03 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16

I went out to eat with my mom for Pho (vietnamese noodles, yum!) and after a few bites, I discovered unwanted "meat" in my soup - there was a bug!

Mom asked if I was sure it wasn't the spices and I was sure, I saw his few legs!! I returned it and they brought another soup for me, and I cautiously ate it.

This got me thinking - is this a head thing?? I ate the soup just fine before I discovered the bug. If I had never discovered the bug, there is a great possibility I would have eaten it unknowingly. Who knows how many times we've unknowingly eaten bugs?

Is it really worth sending your bowl back? What would you do? What are your thoughts about this TOTALLY unimportant issue?

When I told the waiter that there was a bug in my soup, I tried to do so discretely because I didn't want to alarm any other guests. I would probably do the same thing if I was a guest at a wedding..

Lol... hell yes its worth sending it back..BLEHHHH that and hair. OH MAN! i will eat a huge variety of food, but when it comes to anything, off color, or "Crunchy" when its not suppose to be.. i wont eat it. like if i go to a restaurant and order a burger, and i am happily eating it and i bite down on something hard. YUCK i won't eat ANYTHING at all, it actually makes me sick. its SO in my head and i know this. but yucky lol Sorry you had a buggie in your Pho

I definitely would not have ordered another bowl of soup! And I am not sure I would have ordered anything else. If there is a bug in the soup, there are bugs in the kitchen. I have no interest eating there again.

However, I would not trash talk them. It could have been an isolated incident, but I am just picky about my food.

Once when I was young there was a dead fly in our butter at a steakhouse..my dad told me not to say anything, and we discretely put a napkin over it..I suppose if it had been in the fries or something critical; we didn't use much butter, then he would have said something..so that's a factor lol..but if it's something I'm eating directly, then yes I'd probably ask for another one..now if it's hair, and really questionable if it is my hair or eyelash or something, then i'll just take out that portion of it (I recently was at an Indian buffet, and thought it could be my eyelash lol)..I just put the piece of chicken on a plate I was done with, since I could just go back and get more.

If it's a long hair and def not mine, and not a buffet, then yes I'd probably ask for another one.

    Oh no!

Yeah I think weird stuff happens at all sorts of restaurants, whether they're 5 star or fast food or mom and pop shops. I usually figure something like that is an isolated incident especially if it's a fly.......I would totally send it back b/c bugs can carry disease and germs but it would gross me out way less than a hair. Hairs flying around in food is just bad hygiene IMO and way more in the staff's control than a random bug here and there.

I get totally grossed out by detached hairs even if they're mine. Any time I dump out our vacuum I gag. :ugh:

I'd have sent it back! Gross! It maybe just a head thing, but if you are no longer comfortable eating it than you should send it back. Why pay for something you can't bring yourself to eat?

Kris, once again I agree with you. Hair or something like a band-aid...I'd never eat there again.

Ewwww....I would have sent it back, picked up my purse and left. My association with that restaurant would have been done.

Lol Pan, seriously, I know! Ugh, gross. Bandaid. :ugh:

You know what else skeeves me out? When people do hygiene stuff in the workplace. When I went to orientation for my last job there was a chick in class plucking her eyebrows and clipping her nails in class. WTH?

I would have asked for a different bowl. But i would not have been bothered to the point that i could not eat any more or never visit that restaurant again. Bugs are a part of our lives and no matter how Sanitary an establishment is it is inevitable that a bug or 2 will somehow make it onto an entree. As long as the situation is resolved and apologized for, i am fine.

Hair on the other hand does not bother me in the slightest. I will just pick it out and continue eating. Its just hair. I have it on my head, and more than likely, all over my shirt (dogs). So i can understand a hair from the cook or waitress accidentally falling onto my plate. Its wont hurt me, and doesn't gross me out. Why let it ruin my night?

After the dog sh- errrr, "food" they tried to feed me while i was deployed in Afghanistan, a little hair is the least of my concerns lol...a dish with a bug in it would go back to the kitchen...but a band-aid? fingernails? bones in dishes that aren't even supposed to have meat in them? yaaaaah i probably will not be returning any time soon haha.

There's actually a certain amount of bugs that are allowed in things like candy and all. imagine the things that get crushed at the factory and end up in your foods! In some countries they eat bugs readily. Good protein, i believe! But yeah, if I found one i would send it back, even if it's all in my head Smiley winking

I would have sent it back too. one time i was at sweet tomatoes, sat down to find there was a fly in the salad i had put on my plate.... didn't go back there for like 5 years because all i could think about was the fly in the ceasar salad. now when i go there i dissect my food to make sure there are no bugs lol.

i know that flies are everywhere and its probably common but it grosses me out.

I'm the person ALL that stuff happens to. Bug in salad, crack in glass, handle about to break off coffee cup, hair from someone else in my food, soup not hot enough, beef & chicken & pork not cooked enough, etc. I just discretely call over my server and point out the problem.
