We are having a small, 50-person wedding. Recently, it was brought to our attention that we should have a seating chart because there might be some confusion as to who sits at the head/family table. While my fiance and I spent some time over the weekend sorting out which family members sit where he asked, is it proper to tell people where to sit vs. just putting the guests at specific tables and letting them figure out what seats to sit in?
I’ve never been to a wedding with a seating chart, so this is new to me.

You will be feeding guests dinner correct? Many couples do plated meals where the guest selects a choice beforehand. In that case, your caterer needs to know how many and where they are seated. Color coded placecards work best for that..a solid red for beef, solid pink pink for chicken, green for vegan or whatever your colors are..with a list given to the caterer of how many at each table.

Anytime you are having any number if guests, you need to at the very least assign them to a table and let them pick the seat. There is never any reason to pick the actual seat for them.
Free for all seating with no assignments of any kind always in ends in disaster with people getting separated, too many chairs at a table, aunt saves 6 seats no one sits in and wont give them up.
Individual cards are always easier on everyone. They are easier for your caterers, and for your guests who find their name, grab and go. Most charts on posterboard or glass are in illegible fonts, very tiny and cause traffic jams. If someone gets sidetracked by conversation on the way to the table, they have to go back and find their name again where a simple card in their hand can easily be glanced at anytime.
