Hi there! I wanted to check in with the experts here...

What is the main appeal for reception seating charts? I know this is a growing trend but I'm not sure I understand why. We get married in August of 2020 and I'm curious if this is something I want to do or not?

My only experience with a seating chart at a wedding was not a very great one. My fiance was of one of the Best Men and my name was nowhere to be found on the seating chart. That really made me feel pretty left out and like I didn't belong. I don't want anyone feeling this way on our day.

Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you in advance!

I'm struggling with this also...we drove ourselves crazy over the seating chart for our engagement party and the people that arrived before we did just sat where they wanted. I was a little upset at first but in the end it all worked itself out. I dont want to go through that again for our wedding but my fiance keeps insisting that we need to have one...urghhhhh so torn!!

Yeah! I live in a small town and it was late to catch on here but big cities have been doing it for a while. All the theaters in my area changed over in the last year. When you purchase your ticket you pick your seat from a seating map! Makes it sooo much easier.

Sounds nice. But also like a headache. Fiance likes specific seats.

You can pick them in advance from your phone. I like it because you don’t have to get to the theater super early to find a decent seat and more people can fit in the theater without awkwardly asking people to scoot over. I imagine most theaters will switch over in the next few years. Our small town theater that only has 4 screens has switched.

I feel like you only need one if you are doing played meals and there are multiple options because the staff needs to know where to take the food. Otherwise let people sit where they want!

I’ve been to over 30 weddings in the past 2 years, not one had a seating chart. Most had “reserved” seating for the immediate family and maybe spouses of the wedding party, and the rest was just general seating. There was never any “chaos” or stealing of chairs that other posters are talking about. I honestly think it’s very controlling to tell people where they should sit.

Unless you have extra tables and couples and families often get split up with open seating. Even if you do placecards (assign folks to a table and let them pick the seat) instead of a big chart, that chaos is eliminated.

The only time I wouldn't assign tables is if it was a dessert or appetizers reception.
