Second Dress?

Jaclyn, on June 30, 2021 at 7:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

Did you guys get a second dress for the reception? I love my dress..its a ballgown and I had planned to wear it all night. But my fiance and I have decided to secretly take dance classes and learn a waltz for our first dance and surprise everyone (my fiance does NOT dance at all!) And although I would love to wear my ballgown during the dance, i am concerned about tripping over myself while dancing and twirling and just maneuvering in it. So now I am debating getting a second dress that would be a bit more manageable and safer to wear.

Yes! I got a second dress for our reception so I can boogie down on the dance floor without worrying about a big train

I have a huge ballgown and have very similar concerns! That said, we are not doing a choreographed dance (although we've tried to learn three fun moves to spice up our dance!) and it's only like, a 3 minute song, so I don't want to change just for that. I think I'm just going to test it with my sister/whoever I take to my fitting, and then just... take it on, unless trying it out is a full-on disaster.

I didn’t want to change dresses- I loved my dress & wanted to wear it as long as possible! Talk with your dance instructor & ask their opinion.

I'm not getting a second dress. Talk to your instructor and ask about how to dance in your gown and see if they have any costumes similar to the weight/size of your dress you could borrow for lessons.

I didn’t have a ball gown but I had a pretty large A-line dress! It had a lot of layers and overall wasn’t super easy to move in because I kept stepping on it. I kept it on as long as I could but ultimately I changed into a different dress after our first dance. To be honest, my dad was holding me up during our whole first dance because I kept stepping on the dress and sliding all over! I recommend having something to change in to, even if you don’t use it.

We are also taking dance lessons for our wedding. I'm sticking to my dress. It's a lot of dress but I've personally never been for the reception dress changing.

I did get a second dress, but didn't change into it until after dancing had already started, so I wore my ceremony dress for our first dance, dinner, and dessert, and a dance or two and then changed. My second dress was more comfortable to move in, walk, and dance in later in the night, and it was a totally different look than my first dress. But my first dress was beautiful, I feel way more attached to it, and I'm glad I wore it for the majority of our photos.

We had a Covid elopement last spring and then a wedding celebration this year. Since I wore my wedding dress for our elopement, it was no longer a surprise to my husband. I thought a second look would give us a new special "moment" for our wedding celebration, but I was on the fence about getting a second dress until I tried on my original dress about a month before our celebration and realized I could no longer sit down in it! I ended up slimming down a couple pounds before our celebration so my ceremony dress fit perfectly, but still opted to change after a couple of dances in my first dress. But if it hadn't been for Covid forcing us to have two different events and my weight fluctuating slightly over the course of an entire year, I don't think I would have bothered with a second dress at all.

My first dress was a fit-and-flare lace dress with an illusion lace bodice and long train, so the hips were tight and limited my dancing. My second dress was a silk slip dress with a center slit, a looser fit and less bridal but way easier to dance in. My first dress was everything I wanted for my ceremony dress, but my second dress was close to what I wanted for a reception dress, but not exactly it (it had very modern spaghetti straps and I wish it had thicker straps and a slightly more old Hollywood vibe). I kind of ran out of time to find the perfect reception dress and I didn't want to spend a ton on second look for my wedding, so I compromised and settled on what I could get ordered and altered in a month without paying more than I did for my "real" wedding dress. Also, I was trying to hide the dress from my husband so it got wrinkled where the hem was bunched up in the garment bag, and I just didn't have time to steam it once I started getting ready. I so regret that and should have just erred on prepping the dress correctly and not worrying about it being a total secret. I haven't gotten pro photos back yet but I'm worried I won't like any of them in the second dress because it's wrinkled at the hem and pretty noticeable, at least in guest photos, because the dress is silk and has a slight sheen so really emphasizes wrinkles in directional light. I think if I had loved my second dress as much as my first, and felt as beautiful in it, I would have been really happy to have two dresses and be more comfortable later in the night, but I'm not sure I'd recommend getting a second dress if it doesn't make you feel as beautiful as you do in your ceremony dress.
