Second guessing friend as photographer

Cfro, on November 5, 2021 at 9:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
Help please!! Sorry this is long. So shortly after getting engaged we decided to see if a friend of ours that does photography would be interested in shooting our wedding. We realized she had not done a wedding before but had seen other events she photographed and they looked good but she definitely is more of a nature and landscape photographer. Anyway, she said she would definitely be interested and so we all agreed and a couple months ago she shot our engagement pics. The pics came out good, not great. It didn’t seem like she did any editing; it was a hot day and our faces were really red! So now I’m just worried about the wedding pics not coming out good and also that she’s not gonna know what to do. How would we tell her we don’t want to have her photograph the wedding without offending her and losing a friend? To clarify, she’s not a close friend, more a friend you see once in a while. Thank you for any help!

I think approaching it as, “While we really appreciated you shooting our engagement pictures, we have decided for our wedding day to have our friends enjoy the full day and not have anyone work our wedding.”
If she says she still wants to shoot your wedding, you just repeat the line above, and essentially that her shooting the wedding doesn’t fit your vision anymore.

I would recommend not using "friendors" ie friends in place of/along with vendors. Keep the people around your wedding day work activities to the professionals. I agree with H, thank her for the engagement photos and just say you'd like her not to have to work at the wedding.

We ran into the exact same issue! I booked a professional wedding photographer because I really don’t want any regrets after our wedding pictures since there’s no re-dos. We told our friend that we’d like him to enjoy himself as a guest at our wedding instead, and he can take pictures of my fiancée while getting ready, as our photographer will be with me during the getting ready!

If she's as professional as one would hope, she will understand. Not everyone's work is everyone's cup of tea!

We have a friend photographer who will be in charge of the getting ready shots for me. Our professional will handle everything else. We are thinking of her more as a second shooter.
