Self catering reception - success stories?

I realize that most here advise against self-catering your own reception but I would love to hear from people that did self-cater with much success and would actually choose to do it all over again. I realize that most here advise against self-catering your own reception but I would love to hear from people that did self-cater with much success and would actually choose to do it all over again.

My husband (yes we're already married, we're having a marriage celebration and reception), wants to self-cater buffet style a spiral ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn on the cob, salad and deviled eggs. His sister will make the eggs and we will make the rest the day of. Our guest list is a total of 74 people right now including 9 kids so we plan to provide enough food for 80. Our plan is to have a ceremony at 6pm where we read our own vows and as soon as we're done, we will announce "let's eat!" All this is going to take place in our backyard and will be very casual and informal.

We're thinking of hiring a person or two to help set up, watch over the food and help with cleanup. Looking forward to hearing about the success stories and getting advice from the experienced!

Why couldn't you wait until after 12pm to post this? It's too early for the fuckery.

You're right, it is a forum message. You can post whatever you want and people will reply however they want. Not much you can do about that.

PP's are giving you solid advice. Consider taking it.

That's the thing, there aren't success stories.

Brides who weren't completely stressed and overwhelmed by food prep and had a wonderful celebration that all of their family got to enjoy and not slave over and didn't have anyone get sick from the improperly prepared, stored, or served food HIRED A CATERER.

ETA: Also, the reason you had to write essays in English is prepare you to communicate with the rest of the world. Please show the education you have.

You posted about something you know is a hot button topic here. What did you expect? These self-catering threads come around almost daily and ALWAYS get the same response.

Insulting the size of an FH's balls?

Deviled eggs sitting in the sun for hours sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Better have a ton of bathrooms ready. YIKES.

I went to a self-catered wedding. The decorations were lovely and the couple was married. I'd call the wedding a success, but that night I spent in the hospital with food poisoning was not a success. Don't even consider this. Get that thought out of your head now.

Maybe you should call the local hospital and make sure they have 75 beds available for that night. Maybe they offer a group rate.

We are letting you know this is a bad idea and now your mad. Who else saw this coming?

So what I got out of this is OP posted something she knew wouldn't go over well and then got insulted when everyone told her not to do it, and then proceeded to insult those who gave the "don't do this" answers she expected to receive in the first place...

Not to sound like a broken record, but don't do this. For every success story you might hear, you'll get two "everyone ended up with food poisoning" ones.

OP! You know nothing of our man's balls, or about how to properly host your guest! If you did you wouldn't have posted this thread...again you know nothing!!!

OP have you tried searching for this topic? I'm not in favour of self catered weddings because of science.

Also won't it be a vow renewal, as you're already married?

"Lastly, whoever said I was either ballsy or clueless, lol! My balls are probably bigger than your man's. Is that the reason your so rude and angry or were you born that way?"

That user would be me, thanks. I was neither rude nor angry. Good to know you have huge balls? What you wrote is so irrelevant, I just can't even handle it. Why don't you try reading things in context. You're even more clueless than I thought.

FYI- saying someone is ballsy does not directly refer to the size of anyone's balls.

My sister's wedding was self-catered. The food was delicious and as far as I know, no one got sick. That said, it was tons of work for several people for hours/days leading up to the wedding. And although lots of efforts were made to keep everything at safe temps and safely handled, it's probably still fair to say that we "dodged a bullet." I would not recommend self-catering, especially for a group of more than 20 people.

Hosting 70+ people in your backyard is a lot of work even without self-catering. I strongly recommend shopping around and finding an affordable caterer to take those worries off your mind.

Perhaps it's my age but if I frequented any forum, and I have in the past, then I would not take the time to respond to any post unless I had something constructive to offer. The reason I mentioned "hot topic" was simply to acknowledge that it is, not that I felt it actually mattered in the context I was asking which are for success stories, not the bitter, angry, immature repeatedly stating what I've already read!

Yes, I can be just as rude as the next person but that's not my nature. However I don't take kindly to be called clueless or other names so if you don't want it dished back at ya, don't dish it out. Smiley smile

One success story that I found that deserves a further read: http://www.younghouselove.com/our-backyard-wedding/

*If* we decide to ignore the advice and do it anyway, we will hire people to help us, not depend on family to do it. Deviled eggs made the same day and brought out right at dinner and kept on ice are just fine. SIL offered, she loves making deviled eggs and has worked for a catering company in the past.

This meme is getting a lot of work this morning.

You knew this was a hot topic, there is no need to be rude to the individuals responding to your topic, who don't agree with you. If you wanted someone to agree with you and hold your hand and tell you it was fine, posting on a forum where you know it's a hot topic not your smartest move. But good luck on your self catered wedding and everything else.

Honestly - The price to properly cater BBQ is likely not much more than what you are looking at, and the head aches and risks are 1000% less...... at least look into actual catering. ... the work alone is going to be exhausting.

Edit - This from a women who cooks thanksgiving for 50 people every year - I WOULD NEVER do it on my wedding day when I want to be able to enjoy myself....
