Self Solemnization in Colorado: bit of a rant, sorry.

Brittany, on April 28, 2014 at 1:43 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Someone called me out in another post and said if I wasn't having a ceremony, I wasn't getting legally married and the only way to legally marry was to have an officiant. I don't know if it's just because it's Monday, but this annoyed me. Marriage laws are different from state to state, I don't pretend to know what they are in Massachusetts or Michigan or any other state in the union, so don't make yourself sound foolish by pretending to know what they are in Colorado. http://www.denvergov.org/denverclerkandrecorder/ClerkandRecorder/MarriageLicenses/MarriageCeremoniesOfficials/tabid/437534/Default.aspx

I can see why she might not have thought it was possible. I didn't know anything about self solemnization until right now. Smiley smile It looks like only a couple of states allow it, right? Interesting!

That's kind of cool - I never knew you could do that. I can understand why that would bother you - someone basically telling you you're not really married. Thanks for the update!

Yep, as far as my very basic research tells me PA is the only other state that allows it.

Wow I am in Co and I did not know that. Although I guess it kinda makes sense since Co has common law marriages.

This is totally true. No officiant needed. We're totally DIY!

That actually sounds really intimate and wonderful. You could just say your vows and promises to each other in front of friends and family and that would be that. I would actually like to be married that way.

My coworker did that and she got married in PA. I believe she called a self uniting/unification license or something. She had a Jewish ceremony though, so there were some other rituals they had to do.

This is exactly what me and my husband did. We walked right into the dmv in Brighton ordered the marriage license signed it and gave it back to recording. Easiest part of the wedding so far Smiley smile
