Selling wedding date

Emma, on April 23, 2021 at 3:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
Has anyone ever tried to sell their wedding date at their venue so they could try and get some of their deposit back? My FH and I are considering not doing the whole large, expensive wedding and eloping, but we don’t want to lose out on the $6500 we paid. Our wedding isn’t until November 2022, so lots of time to plan. Has any one tried this and have any advice?

I belong to a wedding advice facebook page in my area (CT) and I see posts like this all the time for people selling their deposits. They just list it as an item for sale. Usually there are people interested, so it wouldn't hurt to try.

Go for it, just double check it is not explicitly prohibited in your venue contract. I know it is in mine. Varies from place to place.

I don’t see anything in it that says it’s against their policy, but I guess I should ask beforehand? I didn’t even think about that!

As PP said, some venues don’t allow this, so definitely check with them first. Most venues would obviously much rather you forfeit your 6500 and that way they can get another couple and get an initial 6500 for that same day which is pretty terrible in my opinion, but that is the world of weddings

Thank you! You’re probably right but I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask! Sad that venues do that!

I agree, it is sad… I mean I definitely understand when they do it when the wedding is like three months away, because that’s usually a time where they can’t book that date any longer, but to not allow an unhappy person out if a date that someone else wants when they won’t be losing any money at all is pretty unfortunate.

In addition... don't do it here.

It's against WW rules, and your post will get taken down.

I'm currently looking to do this at the Ole Hanson Beach Club in San Clemente on 8/20/2022. I'm curious if anyone had success "selling their date" I would love to get out of my 20k contract with the venue and take a killer honeymoon!
