Sequin Bridesmaids Dresses?

MNBride, on March 21, 2016 at 11:49 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 21

I really like the look of sequin dresses. I have seen them in a few BAMs here and I thought they looked good. I know they can get expensive so I thought of maybe having my sister MOH wear a sequin one and the rest of the girls in different dresses and colors. I went out to dinner with my friends Friday, two of which will be in the wedding even though I haven't officially asked anyone yet. They started asking me about dresses and I mentioned this idea to them. They all hated the idea and I was surprised. What do you guys think of this trend? Tacky? Overdone?

I think they can look beautiful when done correctly but it's definitely not everyone's style. Keep in mind that sequins tend to draw attention to problem areas because of all the light reflection. I wouldn't rule it out, but with such a statement look I'd really work with your bridesmaids to find a dress everyone is comfortable in! Sequins are also a big trend in general right now, so maybe you can find a dress with sequin accents for a happy medium?

I love them but they can be extremely painful. The sequins will rub your under arms raw. I have seen sequin maxi skirts and a cute tank, which I think is super cute or look at beaded dresses if you want the shine. Adrianna Papell is most famous for this but Hayley Paige just released some dresses with Beaded straps (these will be mine, so excited). HP is rather expensive, but you can find Adrianna Papell on resell sites and places where you can get good sales, like macys and nordstroms.

Maybe you can show them pictures of what you have in mind. What they're imagining may be different.

One of my friends was a bridesmaid and they got their sequined dresses from Forever 21.

Awesome thanks I will look into those! Defiantly doesn't have to be all sequin, my sister is super girly and loves anything that sparkles so I just want her to have a special dress.

My wedding will be glitter and sequin free, but I love the all sequin dresses. They have some really cute ones at Jcpenny & Macys. You could go with your MOH in all sequin and the BMs in something with a little in the fabric.

Depends on the dress. Once they try on one that you love, they might love it too.

My girls were going to wear gold sequin dresses, but when they tried them on they were horribly uncomfortable.

They're not very comfortable, they're not very forgiving for trouble spots, and they definitely can't be worn again. I would look into something else.

I would hate if someone asked me to wear one. I have self-image issues and would not feel confident in one.

I they they look so cute, but not sure if they'd look good on me. I'd be willing to try it on and see though before completely ruling it out. Maybe you could keep it in the running and when you go dress shopping just see how it works on everyone.

I love the sequin dresses. I would love them in gold or emerald green. But I'm not sure they will work for all the bridesmaids, since they tend to be form fitting. I plan to have them try them on and if they are horrible maybe try something with beading instead.

I disagree. I am wearing this dress for a summer wedding, and all the girls look great in it. We vary in body types, though not to any extremes.

This particular size was too big on me, but I think its really pretty in the rose gold. It's also quite comfortable.

Only caveat is it's not cheap, this dress will be about $300 before alterations. If you do sequin, you get what you pay for.

ETA: Also, this was the baggiest, most forgiving, comfiest cut ever. Not sure what is "unforgiving" that PP are talking about....

Thanks everyone, I didn't even think of the fact that they would be uncomfortable. Just to clarify not all of them would be wearing one, just my sister (maybe). The other girls would be in regular bm dresses.

M that dress is so pretty, thanks for sharing! My sister is 5'10 and built like a super model so she would look good in a potato sack.

@m.m that's an Adrianna papell which is why it is flattering. I love her dresses. Also the way the top is is why it's not painful. When most people think or talk about sequin bridesmaids dresses they mean these, which are tight, sheath dresses with sequins in the armpits and are usually pretty heavy. AP is the OG of these dresses and she has perfected them.

I second Beka - I saw some super cute and affordable ones at JCPenney. I personally like them as long as it's not overdone.

My BMs dress color is plum (the actual name is African Violet... but it's plum) and my MH's dress was to be silver. Everyone knew their color and had a swatch and were told to find a dress in their choice style and price range and to please get it as close to the color of the swatch as possible. Well long story short we went with gold for the MH and she found a sequins dress and it looks great and we all love it. None of the BMs that have their dress have sequins, but no one thinks it will look odd. She's the MH, she can look different. My FGs' dresses have gold sequins too, which is why silver for MH was changed to gold. So obviously I think your idea is great! Smiley smile

Nope, it's a Donna Morgan! I find her dresses much better constructed than AP (based on what I've tried on, but I appear to wear a lot of DM).

My girls are wearing the same dress pictured by @OriginalLaura, they are renting from rent the runway (RTR). downfall is you don't get to alter, but they do send you two dresses in two different sizes. That dress is actually only $70 to rent for 4 days. I will say your wedding is so far away though, that I would keep an open mind. Obviously I love sequins BM dresses, but you might change your mind. When I first started looking sequins was not on my radar until one of my BM suggested it, then I fell in love and its all I wanted. I have a 20 month engagement, and my mind has not changed. So on April 1 I will be ordering them (you can only order 4 months in advance).
