Serving water sustainably

Lia, on July 16, 2020 at 10:45 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 12
Hi! It’s important to my fiancé and me that we shy away from single use plastic at our wedding. We will be purchasing biodegradable cups for bar drinks, as well as biodegradable utensils and plates. What I can’t figure out is water!!! We will have over 300 guests next year (hopefully) and the thought of purchasing that many plastic water bottles breaks my heart.
Our wedding venue does not provide food or drink so it’s on us.
Any ideas? I thought of boxed water but it’s SO expensive...

Hate to sound harsh but in order to save the environment you will need to budget for the boxed water or provide large water dispensers which you can fill with water but you would use plastic. Do you feel having a recycling bin to toss the bottles in would not be helpful?

I know it's still plastic, but maybe those gallon jugs and you can use the same biodegradable cups?

I agree with pp if you have large water dispensers then you can do that! I love that you’re thinking sustainably by the way

Thank you for your suggestions so far!
@kristen, it doesn’t sound harsh. I’ve committed to not using the single use plastic, I just wasn’t sure if there were other things I wasn’t thinking of before spending tons of money on boxed water! I think recycling is great but definitely want to try to not use as much single use plastic as I can. Smiley smile
@Hannah and @Melle, thank you for the idea on the larger water dispensers. Even though they’re still plastic, I would definitely feel better about purchasing the larger 5 gallon jugs than the plastic water bottles. I’ll definitely be giving this a lot of thought!

Also call around to local water delivery companies and see if you can rent their equipment for day.

I’m sure they have some sort of garden hose in the back of the venue where your guests can go and drink out of the hose! Also, there’s water in the bathroom right? The toilet bowl should do the trick. Another idea would be to use glass. Best of luck!

Unfortunately with Covid, a lot of venues are not allowing beverage dispensers because too many people touch them and they need to be "single use"water bottles.

Check with your venue about what’s allowed, but there are some great glass dispensers out there!

You want her guests to drink water out of a hose or toilet?

When someone is having a 300 person wedding during the times of coronavirus with no other source of water available, I think its a bit crazy to complain about plastic individual bottles or the cost of individual boxed water. I also think it puts everyone at risk to be passing around the same jug or using the same dispenser of water. But that’s not the question that was asked. The question that was asked was what’s a cheaper alternative for her guests in order for them to be able to drink Water. Maybe my post was a bit crass, but if I were a guest attending someone’s wedding, I would certainly hope that their would be a practical source of individual drinking water available that I don’t have to pass around or share between 299 other people. plastic bottles, or glass or boxed. But that’s just me.

I didn’t mean to upset you, DJ! My wedding is next August, 2021, so I’m holding onto hope that covid won’t be as large of a concern as it is now. If it is, I’ll narrow down the guest list and get individual water bottles if necessary. I’m not trying to leave people without water 😂
I will continue to plan my wedding with the hope to continue with my large guest list and being as sustainable as possible. I appreciate your intense concern.
