Setting a Budget??

Jenelle, on May 22, 2019 at 7:06 PM Posted in Ohio Planning 1 4
Hey all!! I just got engaged and I'm trying to set a budget for the wedding, but I have no idea how much is reasonable! My fiancee and I will be paying for everything ourselves. I used the budget tool on this site and the most minimal budget I was able to make for the wedding is basically my entire bank account. The wedding isnt until next August/September so we will have time to save more, but spending my entire life savings on the wedding seems like a lot!! Does anyone have any thoughts? Is it normal to be spending that much of your savings on a wedding??

Hey Jenelle! Congratulations on your engagement! I know that planning an entire wedding can seem a little daunting but be sure to take some time to enjoy your engagement too!

There really are plenty of ways to keep the cost down on your wedding, it doesn’t have to cost you your life savings, and you’re right about only wanting to spend what you can afford.

The biggest cost of a wedding is having a large guest list. I know you may want to have everyone you know come together to celebrate with you but often for couples, that’s not feasible. Have you ever heard of a micro wedding? By having a small guest list, you will be spending less on catering, on drinks, and on your venue, as well as so much more. Perhaps you would be interested in this article that I found in the ideas section - What is a Micro Wedding and Why Should You Care?.

There are plenty of other helpful tips and articles in the idea section that might give you inspiration or offer advice. I have linked a couple that you might be interested in.

I'm glad I could help a bit! A budget-friendly wedding is very achievable, once you get over the initial shock. I love the boho style! You could check out Pinterest for some DIY decor ideas if you are in any way crafty!

Some things we are doing is not sending out save the dates(we’re calling people instead), pass out as many invitations in person as possible to save on postage, not having wedding favors (nobody will notice), only having beer and wine, having a small bridal party, got my dress at a shop that sells consignment and sample dresses so I can still get a designer ball gown without the high price tag, getting married on a Sunday (we saved $1000), and not inviting everyone we know (we will be having about 100 friends and family). Hopefully this helps!
