Sewn in cups. Support?

Becoming a Mrs, on January 6, 2016 at 8:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 20

My dress is corset backed. And I'm trying to figure out if I should go strapless or get cups sewn in. But I have no idea what that is like because I've never had them before. Do they give you any support? What is the point of them? Do you think I'll need extra support with a corset dress?

It would be hard to say if you need a strapless bra without seeing how you look in the corset. When I worked in a bridal salon, we often recommended certain undergarments (sewn in cups, longline strapless, etc) to brides in order to give the nice smooth finish they desired. Many brides, even the ones not so top heavy, were usually happy about the recommendation because they felt more comfortable in their dress and with their look. Brides who did not often reported readjusting a lot throughout the course of the night. Undergarments are totally a personal preference, but I always think it's better to be safe than sorry later.

I had sewn in cups w/ a corset back. They were perfect. The corset pushed everything up and the cups helped shape 'em. It was definitely enough support. 34b for reference.

I had sewn in cups and they did provide some support, but I'm not very big and the structure of the dress itself is probably what gave more support overall. You should probably talk to someone who does alterations and see what they recommend for you,

My dress has a corset back. originally, i was really against wearing any undergarments since that's sort of the point of the corset! i tried it on with a long strapless bra and without and it looks so much better with the undergarments! it smoothed me out and gave a great shape - in addition to giving my really great chest support (i'm a full D cup).

I think it depends on your size. I'm a D cup and my seamstress said sewing in cups wouldn't provide much support and I would be sagging. I ended up buying a very comfortable strapless bra at JC Penny.

In this picture when trying on I had a corset bra with the corset laced up. It's not very flattering. Not all the pictures looked like this but I def don't want to look like this at all on my wedding day lol. I do think the dress needs to be pulled up a little bit too.

Thanks for starting this thread-- I didn't do this for my wedding dress (wish I had!) but had just had the billiiant (IMO) idea of having cups sewn into my 'fancy dresses', but I'm also heavy on top and was worried about support. Now I know!

I'm more comfortable and have more "oomph" in my corset backed dress when I wear a bra. I'm not sewing it in, though.

@BecomingAMRS....honestly, that doesn't look like they laced it very well. My seamstress had me hold the top where I wanted it, laced it up, then had me adjust the girls. This just looks like they pulled it as tight as possible and smushed you in.

I had a corset back and no cups. The lacing held the girls in nicely.

Having cups sewn in was amazing! I loved not having to worry about a bra and since the back of my dress was super low it was a great option. If you're worried about support have them sew in push up cups which are a little more padded and will help keep the girls up.

@nowaseptmrs you are right I was not laced in all the way. She only did a few and did it very tight while I had the corset bra on as well.

I had cups sewn in for some added "oomph". I actually had TWO sets of cups... one for padding and one for lift Smiley winking I'm a 34B, btw.

ETA: I should also probably mention, I was going for a sexy look!

Here's my disembodied chest shot. Again, this is corset back with thin cups sewed in. I had originally tried a strapless bra but didn't like how much of a lift I got from it. My dress was form fitting, so it was really important to me to have a more modest look on top. My dress has spaghetti straps, but I don't know if they really helped w/ support. They were pretty flimsy. Hope this helps!

Also, I'm so amused by how weird that looks cropped.

I also purchased a strapless corset back dress. I am a 34B and a tad on the small side of the B spectrum. I will be sewing in cups and may also be adding the silicone cutlets for extra oomph. If there is one day I'm going to have cleavage, it's going to be on my wedding day!

Every dress is going to be different and your best bet overall is to ask your seamstress what she would do given your dress and what you want.

Sewn in cups are great! And if you do not want them, Victorias Secret makes backless strapless sticky bras that work wonders!

I'm getting a strapless elongated bra. Makes your curves look great while adding support and lift to your top area
