My husband and I dated for 7 years before getting married and we lived together for most of that time. As Christians, many of our family members considered it "shacking up" and felt that we shouldn't live together before walking down the aisle but we completely disagree. Instead, we believed that living together before marriage would help us to test our compatibility in the long run. Our experience is that some people live together and realize that they can't tolerate one another and the relationship is not going to work.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe in "shacking up" before marriage? Why or why not?

I don't necessarily agree with the comparison of test driving a car and living with your spouse but I understand your point.

I agree that living together gives you an insight into who your significant other really is.

But does marriage have to be a permanent change? Do you believe married couples can successfully live in separate homes?

Thank you for sharing this personal information. Hopefully waiting until you had a commitment to move in together will help you and your future husband to stand the test of time.

I think it’s an old school idea. I also believe it depends on your ideals. Do what makes you happy. My dad was super upset when he found out I was shacking up. But, he got over it and your family will too. Times have changed

Honestly, I only know couples who have lived together before marriage.

I think that some Christians can be too judgemental and that is very off-putting. Regardless of someones religious beliefs they have the autonomy to live their lives the way they chose.

I'm not referring to one single study, I have read a few. Nonetheless, I do agree that there are many factors that contribute to divorce so we cannot narrow it down to if the couple lived together before marriage. I appreciate you sharing your perspective.

I think that if people spent more time getting to know themselves before getting married then there would be less divorce.

I think that word choice is very important. Although you didn't mean to offend anyone your comment did come off as very judgemental.
