"Shacking Up" Before Marriage

My husband and I dated for 7 years before getting married and we lived together for most of that time. As Christians, many of our family members considered it "shacking up" and felt that we shouldn't live together before walking down the aisle but we completely disagree. Instead, we believed that living together before marriage would help us to test our compatibility in the long run. Our experience is that some people live together and realize that they can't tolerate one another and the relationship is not going to work.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe in "shacking up" before marriage? Why or why not?

My fiance and I have been dating on and off for almost 4 years and he just proposed a few weeks ago and we are just now moving in together in September. I was raised on those same religious beliefs about moving in before marriage being unbiblical and I respect that BUT I am also not trying to marry a person and end up not getting along with them whatsoever when we move in right after getting married and resulting in a divorce which is ALSO in my family's beliefs to be unbiblical. It's nothing the Lord won't forgive you for!

I agree that there are so many factors that contribute to a successful marriage, its difficult to point the finger at "shacking up" for divorce.

It's so interesting how in your first marriage you waited but you learned that it would have been beneficial and changed that for your second marriage. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I also support those who chose to wait for marriage to live together even though I didn't.

One of my favorite reasons for living together is being able to see one another on a daily basis. With my busy teaching schedule and my graduate school program I would barely have seen my now husband.

Ultimately the relationship is between you, your spouse, and God so doing what's in your best interest is always important.

It's always nice to have your families support. I'm sorry your mother says your marriage won't be valid.

Everyone has there own reasons for "shacking up". Thankfully you'll be married soon so it won't weigh too heavily on you.

I too made the connection with the buying the milk when you can have the whole cow for free saying however I think there are more aspects of marriage besides just living together.
