Short Dress for Reception?

Erica, on June 4, 2021 at 9:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3

I'm getting married in August on a farm (semi outdoors, semi in a barn). The reception is 6-10pm. I have a simple tulle [modestly poofy] ballgown for the ceremony/cocktail hour. I'm considering a second dress for the reception that will 1) be easier to move around in and 2) be lighter since it's August. What are thoughts on wearing a shorter knee length or tea length dress for the reception? Obviously being on a farm it's not a very formal event. (I put "dressy casual" as the suggested attire on our invites.) I'm torn on the decision.

Tea length would stand out from most, and be cooler.

    I'm all for it!! 💖

I bought a short white sequin dress to change into for our after party and ended up changing into it early during the reception! My big ballgown was way too big and way too hot and I felt so much better once I changed!

You can wear a short dress, tea-length dress, or midi dress for your reception if you want. I would just consider how confident and comfortable you will be.

I feel like when I wear short dresses I always want to wear heels to elongate my legs. If I wear a midi length dress with flats or shorter shoes I think it makes me look really stumpy and awkward. So while I love the idea of a midi dress I know I wouldn't like how I looked in it unless I was wearing tall heels, and I would be less comfortable wearing a short dress in tall heels than in a long dress with shorter heels. I was also a rough and tumble child (and kind of the same as an adult) so my knees and shins have some scars and they are various forms of battered at almost any given time, which makes any shorter hemline a complete gamble. As is I have avoiding mountain biking, strenuous hikes, and some of my other "regular" activities for the past couple weeks just in hopes of not having big bruises or scraped up shins for our wedding!

My reception dress is a long, silk slip dress. Its a bit of a looser fit and way more forgiving and easier to move in than my wedding dress, which is fit-and-flare style with an illusion lace bodice and a long train that needs to be bustled. I really don't want to change out of my ceremony dress but its just not comfortable or practical for me to wear the whole night (I gained a few pounds since last year so the dress fits quite snugly now). I also bought a short sequin romper (with a faux skirt front, so it looks like a mini dress from the front, but has the coverage of shorts, which will likely be a lifesaver for me late in the night) as an option to wear as well.

You can wear whatever you want as a reception dress, even something that isn't white or traditionally bridal. I think changing into something more comfortable (whatever that may be) would benefit you and fit your venue, so I say find something you like and go for it!
