Shorten train length possible?

Laura, on May 21, 2019 at 2:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 12

I fell in love with a dress and bought it even though the train is way too long for my taste, age (40), it being my second wedding, and it being a barn wedding. I was told they could cut off all the lace part to the edge of the dress which still gave allowed me to have some train which I want and is still pretty without the lace so I purchased the dress. I am having a change of heart the more I stare at the dress am thinking I want to keep some of the lace part of the train as it looks so pretty and wish I could just have it shortened instead of removing the back lace part all together. Has anyone had experience or know if you can shorten a train with lace detail like this? Will my only options be to cut the entire lace part off or leave it long. I do not want it bustled for the ceremony and want to show off the part of the train that I do have. During the reception I plan on bustling it depending on the end result length. I would ask my seamstress but I haven't gotten to that point in the process to ask. It will be a while till that happens and just need some reassurance it can be done or have my expectation set correctly and move on. Pictures attached. Thank you.

If that were my dress, I'd keep the length & just bustle it during the reception. The lace is really pretty!

    I agree!

I don't think age, second wedding, or venue matters, but if you're set on it, a skilled seamstress will be able to do what you want! They'll either cut the lace, or remove and move and re-sew.

That train and that lace is so beautiful! It would be a sin to cut it! If you love it, then go with it!

Wow that train is soooo long 😳 I’d definitely shorten it. I had a very similar situation with my 2nd choice dress & seamstress in the bridal salon confirmed that she can shorten the train, cut part of the lace from the ends & apply it on the shortened train. So yes, you could have a shorter train with some of the lace on it. You just need to find the right seamstress who knows her stuff.

I wouldn’t worry about “matching” the venue. Any dress you wear will be gorgeous and your guests will never for a second think it wasn’t the right choice for the location. I LOVE that train and wouldn’t want to lose an inch of it. If you love it, don’t stress over making it shorter for any reason. Just bustle it for the reception so it’s not a hassle for you to move around in!

My dress is similar to yours but not quite as long for the train. My dress is a little long but i also didn't want to lose my lace so my seamstress is doing a small tack. Im not sure if i can say this in words so you understand, but basically she's picking a spot in the lace and just running a few threads through it over a spot where the lace lines up. So nothing is getting cut.

Hey Laura!! Have you decided on what you are going to do about your train? It's so beautiful, but would you feel more comfortable shortening it?

I did decide to shorten. I love it long but since I am so short it feels like forever long dragging it. Even though it is beautiful and wish it could work for me it does not work. Not sure how much I will be shortening it as it all depends on what the seamstress can do. I do not have my fitting for a while since emy wedding is not until may 2020.

Yeah, I totally agree with what you mean! You don't want your train to be so long that it's all people will notice. I'm sure your seamstress will do an amazing job! They will definitely be able to give you advice on how much they can shorten it by.

Have you started looking at accessories yet?

Hi Laura, I know it's been a while since you posted this but what was the result of the train on your dress? I'm in the same boat. My train isn't as long as yours but longer than I wanted` but I loved the dress so much. Now I'm having second thoughts. I'm wondering if and how it can be shortened. I'm getting married daytime in the restaurant where we are having an early dinner after, so not a typical wedding event.
