Should i be worried about alterations?

anne, on December 1, 2021 at 10:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
My dress should be here anytime and I was going over the contract to see how much I owed and I noticed that they ordered me a size 16 which seems way too big. I know dress sizes run bigger but the one I tried in store was a 10/12 and the top was big, but around my hips was tight. I know it makes sense to go bigger because it was tight but I am worried that the top is going to be ginormous. My dress also has a lot of mesh and lace and I’m scared it’s going to be too difficult to alter. Am I over thinking? I don’t understand or see why they’d order a dress that was too loose on the top just to fit my hips if it’d be too difficult to take in. I love the details of my dress and will be so devistated if they would have to be changed😭I attached a photo of my dress below. Thanks in advance!Should i be worried about alterations? 1

It's easier to take in a dress then let it out, so it is typical that you order the dress to fit the largest part and then take in the rest. A qualified seamstress shouldn't have an issue.

Sample dresses in boutiques are often stretched out from being tried on so often by women of many different sizes, so the 10/12 you tried on may not have been true to size.

They probably ordered based on your measurements. It’s typical for them to order your biggest measured area. Mine was similar. My waist was about 2 sizes larger than my bust and hips so I’ll just have to take those in. Unfortunately it’s just how women’s sizing works.

This was how my dress worked as well!! They ordered my dress size based on my largest measurement (my hips), and then I had the rest taken in and fitted during alterations!!

It's incredibly difficult to let out dresses that are too tight, so you'd always rather be working on taking it in!!

Dresses are weird. I'm a street-size 6, and my size 14 wedding dress was tight when I brought it home.

Thanks everybody! I don’t feel as worried hearing how common that is. I just am nervous that if the top has to be taken in a significant amount that it might be hard because of the design of the dress. It’s a lot of lace and mesh.

This is normal! I'm a street size 6 and they ordered me a 12 for my reception dress because of my hips.

I am usually between a 2 and 4. I went home with a size 8 dress I believe because of my hips as well lol. I had to REALLY take in the bust and corset area.

I regularly wear a size 14 in pants and stuff my dress was a size 20 😳😂 I plan on losing weight and they said that wouldn’t be a problem to alter my dress ☺️

Same for me! I had tried on a 12 in the salon and then because of my hips they had to order me a 14. I also have an essence of Australia dress!!

Did your dress have a lot of lace/mesh on the area you had brought in?

Yes! My dress consisted of lace, mesh or tulle, and beading. But she made sure to be careful with the beading and lace especially because of how it was designed. She made sure to make the dress flow all around. I honestly couldn't tell where she even had to take it in from the sides because she did such a good job Smiley smile So make sure to discuss certain things you do and don't want them to do when they have to make alterations.

You're welcome! Also if you haven't already check the reviews on your seamstress. That way you know how experienced they are, what their work looks like from past clients, etc. Smiley smile
