Should I buy a Cricut?

Tessa, on December 27, 2020 at 5:44 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12
Has anyone bought and used a cricut for diy-ing signs and little goodies throughout the whole engagement/wedding process? Is it worth it instead of buying things of Etsy or Amazon?

That is an up to you question. Here are some things to think about: How much DIYing do you want and can you do? Would you use it after the wedding? I would think cost effectively does it make sense. Many brides buy a lot of wedding stuff that they have to get rid of afterwards.

If you’re not going to use it afterwards, save your $$ & get your things off of Amazon or Etsy.

I got myself a Cricut after I got engaged. It definitely saved me money in terms of creating the signage for my now-reception as I was able to shop second-hand for mirrors and then cut my vinyl to fit what I purchased. I also addressed all my Save the Dates and invitations using it, made my denim jacket, and did robes for other weddings, However, I do use it outside of wedding projects; if I didn't, I don't think it would have been worth the investment. If you're a crafty person who plans on DIYing a good amount for the wedding but will also use it afterward, I'd say go for it. However, if you only think you'll use it for the wedding, it won't be worth it in the long run. Remember, you're not just purchasing the machine, but you'll also need the mats, weeding tools, vinyl, SVGs, etc. It can add up just as quickly as purchasing the item from someone else, sometimes costing even more.

I got a cricut just for my wedding and I used it to make everything! Robes, shirts, signs, shoes, etc. I love it. I also planned to continue using it after the wedding to make other things. I do recommend it, if you have the patience/time to DIY.

Honestly, I think it would be cheaper to buy items from Amazon or Etsy. A Cricut isn't cheap and unless you have experience using it then you will have to practice which would use supplies. Also, if you only plan on using it for a few wedding things and never again then save your money and purchase items you don't have to create yourself.

I got one as a gift, from someone who knows that I piece and hand quilt quilted items, and sew a lot. And also do work things making signs, and neat colored cards for patients to refer to. Plus I have 5 kids. There is nothing it can do that I could not do just fine with scissors, a small razor point, and a rotary cutter . It took more time, materials cost more, as you need to work with whole sheets of things, not fit together a lot of shaped pieces so there is no waste, as you can by hand. If you like gadgets, and have extra money, ok. But it costs more if you do things regilarly, but not the same thing every time, and you spend time with cartridges and blade changes, when you could do the same things faster, cheaper, with a whole lot less wasted materials, without it. ....... Last year I planned and did hand work for two weddings, one for a cousin who is blind, and was out of the country, and another bride about to leave the army, far from here, who was generous to me when I was stationed outside Seattle. Pay back a debt of friendship. Since the Cricut was new, I made it a point to learn to use it.
Not worth it. Finally, I gave mine to a friend who makes jewelry. she tends to cut huge numbers of a very few square and rectangle shapes of cardboard, and a fused velveteen to cardboard. She also finds it useful for small signs for Fairs.

    Tessa,
It depends on your wedding budget, how much DIYing you will be doing, and how much time you have. If you have great penmanship, you don’t necessarily need one. It also depends on if you think you will use it after the wedding.

I agree with above that it would only be worth it, if you’ll use it beyond the wedding. I convinced my fiancé to get me one for my birthday last year with the pretense that I would use it for the wedding. It’s taken awhile to get the hang of and I wasted a lot of material at first. Accessories and material adds up quickly. I do love it though and am diying a lot of wedding items and have made plenty of gifts and cards for other occasions.

If you are crafty and plan to use it long after the wedding (for a ton of future parties and/or go into business), then feel free to buy one. Otherwise save your money by supporting the other small businesses on Etsy. Be aware that you can ask them to customize fonts, colors, designs they don't advertise.

Most definitely worth it! I’m still learning mine because I don’t use it all the time but I did figure out how to make my proposal cards for my bridesmaids on it and I figured out how to make decals for cups and shirts (after buying some on Etsy). If you have the patience to learn it I say go for it!! I saved a lot of money making my proposal cards on my cricut and they were so different than anything I’ve seen before! I will say some things I know I don’t have the patience to teach myself, I will shop on Etsy for a good price and go that route lol
