Should I get my ring resized?

Future Mrs. Elliott, on January 31, 2016 at 12:21 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 26

Hey everyone! My name is Elisha and I'm newly engaged! My wedding date is 6/11/17 Smiley smile! My FH purchased my engagement ring a size 6 which was my ring size before I had our son. I've gained a lot of weight since then (60 lbs to be exact) and I'm now a size 8. FH didn't realize that due to my weight gain my ring size has increased. I am already in the process of losing weight but I think I should resize my ring so I can be able to wear it now. FH thinks I should wait since my ring size may go back to a 6 after I lose the weight. What should I do? Get the ring resized or just wait until I get to my weight goal?

Resize it now so you can wear it and then resize it again when you lose the weight.

Resize it. You can always resize it again later.

That's what I was thinking but FH says having it constantly resized may weaken the band. I don't know what he means by that.

If you keep resizing it, not only will it weaken the band (due to the process of resizing) but it can also cause issues with the setting. I would give yourself some time to lose weight and see where your ring size ends up being later on. Put it on a different finger (if you can) or wear it on a necklace for now.

    Resize it.

ETA not every week, but after you lose 30lbs? or its falling off your finger. Maybe 2 times until you are at your goal weight.

Your band may weaken and break if you continue to resize it. Give yourself sometime, see how the weightloss goes. Until then wear it on a necklace. I went through the same thing. I was a size 6 ring and then I got pregnant and bumped up to an 8. I waited to see if I could lose enough weight to get back down to my size 6 finger but I didn't (I waited 2 years to see if I could but my body didn't cooperate!) So I got it resized when I realized I wasn't getting back down to my previous size.

    Don't re size it.

To much bending and manipulating will seriously weaken the metal. the band will fatigue and snap at some point.

Just put it on one of those bead chains for the time being.

WAIT until you've lost the weight. Kelsey and Ashleigh are right, if you resize it every time your weight fluctuates it won't last long.

Once you've lost some weight, consider getting it sized up a little (because over the long term you will gain some weight, and if you're planning for kids, pregnancies cause finger swelling and weight gain too). Then put in sizing beads, which can help it stay on if a little loose, but not constrict the finger when it swells.

My dad is a Jeweler. The biggest problem with resizing is the fact that you have to add more gold to the band to make it bigger($$&dollarSmiley winking. They melt the band's gold and the piece they add to it. So you don't have to worry about weakening the band...unless they make it thinner instead of adding more gold. So as long as they add gold to it you will be fine. I suggest asking the Jeweler about the process first! :-)

I wouldn't keep resizing it because like others have said it weakens the band. The jewelry store my ring came from kept messing up the sizing so as a result it kept going up and down in size and eventually the band was so thin extra white gold had to be added. The jewelry store made my FH pay half the cost (which is totally unfair because THEY messed up) so just be aware that can happen.

Yep, you weaken the band every time you resize.

I got engaged in June and have had it resized twice. Nothing wrong with it. I'm sure I'll resize it again before the wedding after hopefully some weight loss. I want to wear mine. I have a lifetime warranty, if it breaks, I'll get a new one.

Thank you everyone! I'll give myself some time and see what my ring size will be after my weight loss! Thank you for the idea of wearing it on a necklace!

@Brittany lifetime warranty as well, and I'm getting it resized again because it's loose.

My ring had been resized once before I got it (FHs mother's ring). I've resized mine twice: once when I first got it a half size up and then yesterday .75 of a size down. I lost 45+ pounds since March, which resulted in a .75-1 ring size decrease. I had a ring guard on the ring, but it was starting to damage it, so the jeweler we got my wedding band from said to resize it. I don't plan to resize it again as I've also heard resizing it too much will weaken it. I would probably resize it to whatever weight you are now and then if needed resize it once more.

I'd talk to a good jeweler for their opinion.

I agree with others that you should be cautious about resizing, but it also sucks a ton not to be able to wear your ring. My experience of baby weight gain/loss is that things redistributed strangely and my fingers did not lose weight right away. My ring size is now 2.5 smaller than it was pre/during-baby, but that took about 100 pounds and 7 years.

So I would resize your ring now (or in 2-3 months if you're really on a roll with the weight loss) and then plan to wear a sizer dealy to take up the extra space if it starts spinning before the wedding. Then see where you're at when it's time to buy wedding bands--wearing the two together may snug it up enough, or you may need to have it resized one more time. But twice is better than just wearing it on a necklace forever in hopes of losing weight in a very specific place that may or may not actually change.

I've lost 85 pounds since FH and I became engaged and my engagement ring is now loose. When we picked out our wedding bands, I asked the jeweler if I should resize it now or wait since I'd still like to lose a bit more. I was told that you can resize up once and down once. Anything beyond that, and you have to add metal to keep the band from getting too weak. If I were you, I'd wait until you're closer to where you want to be with your weight loss.

Wear it on a necklace AND get a fake to wear in the meantime. You can get them for Icing or Amazon for under $20
