Should i go darker for my wedding make-up?

Michelle, on October 28, 2019 at 9:03 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 17

I've never had professional make-up done, I'm not very good myself. My every day make-up is filling in my brows and mascara. If it's a special occasion, maybe a little eye shadow and foundation but even then, those don't show up well in photos.I had my trial scheduled the day of my engagement shoot yesterday. I told my make-up artist I'd like my eyes to "pop". I showed photos, I like more darker eyes and a nude lipstick shade. When she finished, I looked like a completely different person like I was airbrushed lol. It wasn't bad, it was just weird seeing me glammed up! Anyway, I got used to it and I do like it. It looked like A LOT of makeup in person but in photos it actually looked more "natural" rather than more dramatic. What are your opinions? Think I can go a little darker on the eye shadow or keep it how it is? It looks nice in person but it looks a lot lighter in photos. Just for some perspective, here's my graduate photo where this is my own make-up which you can barely tell LOL.

You always need more makeup for camera than in real life because camera will wash away some of it. I think the artist did a good job of capturing your features while still keeping you looking like you. Your fiance doesn't want to go "WHOA WHO'S THAT GIRL?" If you have too much glam face and you're not usually a makeup girl.

Also, I just realized your wedding is a year away-you have plenty of time to try different MUA and get the look you want. NO WORRIES.

Thanks for the input, good point. He mentioned he liked my make-up how it is but I was wondering if going darker would look better.

If you want my opinion, add some bottom lash mascara/eyeliner smoke. That's where I see some room to add a little drama without going SUPER different and over the top with shadow combinations you never wear. And false lashes for sure Smiley laugh

Whatever makes you feel like you look better and more like yourself honestly. I don’t really wear makeup on a daily basis and when I do it’s always very little. I did my own wedding makeup... foundation, concealer, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick... it was noticeable but very light. I felt like I looked good, and like myself. It showed up fine in pictures.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you'd prefer the eye makeup darker, I think you could do so without it being too much. It does look great the way it is though!

I will say don't buy into the "professional photos make you look washed out" craze. I was worried about the same thing, I only ever wear eyeliner, brow powder, and mascara. I was convinced I need a full face of makeup (that I never wear) for professional photos. I took the chance and did my own makeup for our engagement shoot; my usual makeup plus some eyeshadow and lipstick (that's my form of fancy makeup lol). I was SO happy with the way they turned out, my skin was bare, and most importantly I felt and looked like myself! Because of that, I'm skipping the MUA and doing my own makeup keeping the bare face and just doing eye and lip makeup Smiley smile Here are some of our photos so you can see the way pro photos looked with just eye and lip makeup!

Lol I am wearing the false lashes but I chose the "natural" ones which is why they probably don't show up as much. I also told her to add some bottom liner which she did and it looked better. I think that I'll tell her to do that next time in the corner.

Thanks! Your eyes already pop, I don't know, I can't make my own makeup look nice in photos lol. I look bare when I do it even when I think I'm going heavy.

I think you look great with your own makeup and with professional makeup. Unfortunately the reality is, if you’re using professional photography with high exposure lights your non-make a face will look washed out. As makeup artist we understand how much makeup is too much and not enough when dealing with lights from photographers.

My actual question to you is “do you feel your makeup artist gave you the look that you wanted or the look they felt would compliment you the most” The reason I ask this is often times when people talk to make up artist there is a level of understanding that doesn’t always connect. A trained makeup artist understands makeup terminology which doesn’t always translate to a normal person trying to explain makeup without knowing terminology.

If this is the look you want, at the price you want, I would say you have hit the lottery! Have a beautiful wedding!

Here is the look I gave the makeup artist. I think that her makeup is darker and more smokier. Darker shadow and darker lower eyeliner, longer lashes (my fault since I said I wanted it natural lol). I'll choose longer lashes next time to show in photos since you can't really tell in my photo.

This is the other one... so I think my makeup looks like it could be smokier. Ugh, I would hate to spend more money on a trial. I like the makeup she did on me initially but after seeing photos of it not showing up as strongly, I'd like it a bit darker/smokier but I'm afraid now it'll look bad.

I think what I need is darker eyeshadow, more smokier black lower liner, and longer eyelashes for the look I want.

Your professional makeup looks gorgeous. I too am a low makeup gal and scared of what a professional MUA will do to me if I ask for a "natural" look, but seriously I think your makeup looks amazing. It seems like a glammed up version of what you describe as your everyday look. I hate when bridal makeup is a total departure from who the person authentically is and to me this just looks beautiful, not overdone, and the perfect make-up look for a person who rarely wears make-up.

I think it looks fantastic and would want it done the exact same way for the wedding. It's there without being obvious and doesn't hide your natural beauty at all.

Maybe I should stick with the more natural one and just add a darker smokier liner, mascara lower lashes, and longer lashes. I was already shocked how different I looked with "lighter" makeup, I probably will be even more shocked with darker LOL. Plus my fiance really liked it...so I guess as long as I look nice.

Thank you! This makes me feel better. I can play with smokey dark makeup for a special night out another day lol. I think that maybe this is more fitting for "bridal" day light makeup....and so my fiance still recognizes me.

I'll also add that I'm a photographer and the whole "you'll look washed out in photos if you don't have makeup on" isn't true. You should look how you normally do if you have a good photographer.

In all honesty, you're so pretty - You really don't need it. But I do agree, the camera washes out a lot of your normal day to day make up. I feel like I usually put on a good amount, and my camera makes me look like naked face. lol So I would experiment going slightly heavier, but that's just for fun to see what you like Smiley heart

This look compared to what you showed are the same however this has richer contours. Your makeup artist will need to understand hues of brown, tan, vanilla as well as to use of highlighters and blush to accent the contours.

Tell your makeup artist to think of Kim Kardashian.
