Should I have a piñata at my wedding?

Either just me and the groom break it or we give our guests a shot (about 50 guests...I could do multiple pinatas). It would be filled with candy for their favors. (We can provide extra in case they didn't get enough)

I've never heard of having a piñata at a wedding before. I've always associated that with a little kid's birthday party. I just youtubed it. Personally I think its a little ridiculous and I would never do it, but if that's what you want to have at your wedding, then go for it! If its not common to have that in your family or your friends group, be prepared to have a people give you odd looks for having it.

Wow, everybody seems to hate pinatas lol. I say do it at a shower or a bachelorette party 'cause the wedding itself is usually a nicer affair. It was a lot of fun at our Jack and Jill, and the guests liked it too.

Afternoon reception in a park with games -- sure, why not add a pinata?

I agree with Nancy T-- if it fits in with your theme, go for it. Our reception is fairly casual, and I'm trying to throw in fun things for our guests to do wherever possible. It would be tacky at a black tie event, but not at a casual afternoon reception in a park IMO.

I think it would be a lot of fun. I would definitely give your guests a whack at it. It's no fun watching someone whack a pinata and not be able to join in yourself.

I've actually been to a fiesta themed wedding where they made mini piñatas as favors for the guests. (Her dad made them if I remember correctly) but they were supper cute and fun. they used them on the tables to incorporate their theme instead of breaking a large one during the reception.

Can you break the little ones? Seems like not being able to would take all the fun out of it.

I would totally love a pinata at a casual, outdoor wedding. Sheesh - it's not like she's making guests pay to take a whack at it, or filling it with bees. Lighten up! Weddings are a time for joy and celebration.

That said, a pinata filled with bees would be a great way to get everyone to go home.

They had openings on the backs so they were more like mini gift boxes that they filled with Mexican candy. you could break them if you wanted but they were too pretty imo. Our daughter uses ours to hide her "treasures" in (everything that kid finds seems to be treasure)

Hmmm. I know it's not one to whack at, but I saw this and thought it was a neat alternative to a guest book if you MUST have a pinata (I'm not entirely against them...but agree with others about scrambling on the floor for candy).

I had a pinata at my bachelorette party. It was fun.

    Here's the guestbook pinata.

Part of me is a total jerk, because I'd be tempted to put something in an anniversary pinata like, "Hey, you made it a year? I totally beat the spread!"

Semi-formal or formal reception, no way. It wouldn't matter how classy the pinata looked. If it's casual enough that you're playing frisbee, horseshoes already, why not a pinata? Maybe throw cornhole in there too! Have fun & enjoy your day and kudos for wanting your guests to have fun. Maybe grandma won't be crawling around for candy, but hopefully others will!

Butterfly pinata is no fun. Now, a pinata filled with cobras? THAT'S A PARTY.
