Should wine with dinner be included in an open bar package for a rehearsal dinner?

Terri, on May 24, 2023 at 2:20 PM Posted in Planning 1 5

I actually plan weddings and if a person buys an open bar package per person do you think wine being served with dinner should be included in that package?

Every venue we looked at, an open bar meant just that… OPEN BAR. All drinks included, all night (wine, beer, liquor… from cocktail hour until the end of the reception).

I think you’re asking about wine service, not wine available at the bar, yes? Wine service, where servers are walking around and pouring tableside, I do not expect to be included in a standard open bar package. That’s usually an add on. Wine available at the bar, of course.

Wine service only with dinner is a know your crowd thing. For some groups, it’s a must have and for others, it’s a waste of money because it means that other beverages are not available during dinner. Provide it as an add on option that couples are free to choose not to purchase if their group is not big into wine. Many bartenders don’t offer any options to choose from beyond set menus that don’t necessarily appeal to all groups.

Oh, I didn’t think about OP insinuating wine service be included. If you’re talking about wine service, then no, that’s not typically included in an open bar; it’s usually an add on with an additional charge (although some venues do include wine service and champagne toasts in their packages). If you’re meaning should wine be available for guests to go to the bar and get, then yes it should be included.
