Shower games that don't suck

Julie, on March 22, 2016 at 10:23 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

I am cohosting a shower with my mother for my FSIL. My mom really likes shower games, me not so much. What games did you guys have at your showers that guests enjoyed? Also prizes?

Bride bingo, play for a line then a full square. Prizes can be a $5 gift card for Starbucks

The bingo game for gifts usually helps the present opening time go by (prizes for the first X people who get bingo)

I went to a shower that had a game where we connected Disney love songs to their movies (some obscure), a few of us Disney fanatics got really competitive over it.

I'm hosting a shower next month and doing a newlywed game. Every question she gets wrong, she puts a piece of bubble gum (or a marshmallow depending on how you play) in her mouth. It gets pretty funny after a while.

ETA: I definitely agree that games aren't for everyone. I encourage passive games like the newlyweds game, or putting pictures up of the bride and having guests write down their guess for how old she is in each picture. That way, people aren't pressured to play or interact with others if they are uncomfortable with it.

I'm sorry. All shower games make me itchy. Maybe that's my social anxiety, but literally every single party game makes me cringe. And sweat. There's usually sweat.

I don't like shower games. At my sister-in-law's we did the toilet paper bride. Divided into teams and each team got a roll of toilet paper that they had to make some sort of wedding dress on a team member. Awkward...and just no.

Bridal Bingo was definitely the best game I've played! You knew what to mark based on what was bought on the registry but it also helped your guests pay attention to what you are opening. Once you involve alcohol too the Bingo gets a little loud and fun!

I like the bingo, I am very competitive so I usually bring a copy of the registry with me when I go to a shower just in case we play it. Any shower, bridal or baby. Is that cheating?

At my shower, my bridesmaids did two weird games. I think we could have done without them. One was one of those icebreakers where you are supposed to go around and get people to initial the square that says "someone related to the bride" "someone who went to school with the bride" "someone who has known the groom for more than 10 years" etc. The object is to get a bingo out of those. However, the way we played it, nobody got out of their seat, everyone just filled in names. That made no sense to me. The other game, was that everyone had to write down their favorite memory with the bride or with the groom. Nothing was read out loud so I'm not sure the point. I did enjoy reading those after I got home though.

For my daughter's shower my sister came up with a great one. My daughter's husband to be has a full red beard. we divided into groups and each group had a fake red beard to decorate, beads, flowers, etc were provided. One gal wore the beard, others decorated. It was fun and got everyone up and moving and interacting. When it came time to judge, our "celebrity" judge was the groom! This was done towards the end so he was there for gift opening!

@Leigh I totally agree with you! My mom and MOH asked me if I wanted any games at my shower and I told them no. They make me uncomfortable lol. Social anxiety at its finest.

I went to a shower recently where everyone at the table got a small wrapped box, but only one of the boxes had a prize inside. The bride's sister then read a little story with lots of "right" or "left" in it (for example, "The bride knew RIGHT away that she had found the RIGHT dress to marry her Mr. RIGHT. After she LEFT the bridal store, she realized that she had LEFT her keys behind and went RIGHT back to get them." etc) Every time you heard right or left, everyone had to pass their box in that direction. At the end of the story, everyone opened the boxes to see who got the prize.

It was kind of cute since it didn't involve too much participation, and nobody was put on the spot.

I went to a shower recently where the host just made the announcement "Welcome everyone! Thanks for coming. The buffet is open now. There will be no shower games because I hate them. Enjoy your meal."

My FMIL in law had everyone write down advice and fun things for me on cards. And then after I read those out loud, I just picked one randomly out of the box for a basket.

ETA: she also has everyone guess how many hersey kisses were in a mason jar as they walked in.

@Allie- my MOH knows there are to be NO party games when I have a shower! We did a baby shower together and the mother to be was picking teams for games. I nearly went into a panic attack! I didn't know this, but my MOH told her to not pick me under any circumstances!

We did one once where I interviewed the groom on camera, and asked him questions. Then we asked the bride the same questions at the shower, and played his responses. It was hilarious that they had different answers for everything, haha.
