Shuttle vs. No shuttle

Ashley, on July 9, 2021 at 11:00 PM Posted in Planning 1 18

We have about 150 guests invited to our wedding (thinking about 120-130 will show up). We are almost 40 years old so many of our guests are our same age or older and have kids. The nearest hotels are 20 minutes away and about 1/3 of our guests will be from out of state. We are having beer, wine, champagne toast, 2 hour cocktail time and cash bar. Do you guys suggest keeping a shuttle for your guests or not? I'm thinking yes, but want to hear people's inputSmiley smile Thank you!

I have been to over 25 weddings and have never been offered a shuttle. I do not find it necessary.

If it’s in your budget it’s a nice gesture. I really want to provide shuttles but I think they’re beyond my budget. I’d have to sacrifice our late night snack or other food to afford them. I figure our guest rather have a great experience at the actual wedding vs transport.

I’ve never been offered transportation after a wedding. They are adults and should be able to make the proper arrangements.

If it’s in your budget then it’s a super nice thing to do, but like others have said it’s not necessary

I think it’s a great thing to have if it’s feasible for you. I am having a shuttle because I want people to relax and enjoy the party without having to worry about driving later. I am not having an open bar for people to have to worry about stopping at 2 drinks.

In my area it is a normal thing to do. My friends and I will usually stay at the hotel even if it’s local so we can use the shuttle and have fun at the after party.
I’d say in the year before COVID I went to 11 weddings alone (I got to a lot) and all of them had a shuttle offered.
Do what you can and don’t worry about the rest!

I think it’s a regional thing—almost every wedding I’ve attended has had shuttles back to the hotel block. So much so that I get annoyed when shuttles are not offered, especially in areas where Ubers are not prevalent. If it’s in the budget, I’d do it!

Thank you everyone for your input! It is within budget to offer it and I don’t think the area has a ton of options for Uber/Lyft so I might just do it. Thank you!

I would put the money towards the bar so that it isn’t a cash bar instead of the transportation. Guests will value that much more.

As a guest, I’ve always been responsible for my own transportation. A shuttle is a nice gesture if you have extra disposable cash to spend, but it’s not necessary, and you may have guests who want to leave early for whatever reason but have to wait for the rest.

I have never heard of shuttles for weddings. I wouldn’t want to take one, I would feel like I was on a field trip or something.

Haha Samantha, that is a great point! Maybe it is a little tacky? I do think it’s a safe option for people that get a little out of hand with drinking but that’s a great point!

It’s probably a know your crowd thing? I always need an “escape” and always have my own car.
But lots of people here have said it’s common to have a shuttle.

I can ask around to people too to see if they would use it. My FH said that we should do it because then we don’t have to worry about people drinking and driving. Which is valid

I think it’s a nice gesture because you have a good amount of out of town guests.

If there is not Uber in the area, then I think it's really nice. If you know you have guests that will drink heavily, then I think it's nice to ensure a safe ride home, especially if the hotel is far. However, if it's easy to get an Uber or Lyft back, then I think it's less necessary.
