Signing Marriage License DURING ceremony?

SilverSeason120, on June 4, 2017 at 6:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 50

Our officiant mentioned something we could do in lieu of a standard sand or candle unity that caught my attention. She said we could always sign our marriage license during the ceremony, in front of everyone. Has anyone been to a wedding where this happened? Is anyone doing this? I've never been to a wedding where it's happened, but it certainly sounds different.

I went to a wedding in canada that the couple and the MOH and BM signed the papers along with the priest, It was right before the benediction.

We did this at my first wedding. There was a table off to the side and a friend sang a solo while we signed the official paperwork.

I've never seen it, but it actually sounds really sweet. I can picture lots of cheering once it's done.

I was the MOH for a friend during college and we signed the certificate as part of the ceremony. It was quite a while ago so I'm not 100% sure how the order of things went, but I think they did vows, then signing, then were pronounced husband and wife.

I was thinking about doing this along with our "wine ceremony". I think it's a great idea!

Wait, is it normal NOT to sign it during the ceremony? Everyone I knew signed during the ceremony. Must be something usual here, but not everywhere else

In Ontario it's part of the ceremony. The two weddings I've been MOH in, we signed after the vows. Usually the officiant takes the couple off to the side to a table set up with the two witnesses and everyone signs.

Yes, it has happened at basically every wedding I've attended. There is a signing table off to the side and bride and groom / officiant / MOH & BM walk over and sign the license while everyone watches. Music is playing during this time, it is not dead silent. Then they come back to the alter and finish the ceremony and are pronounced as husband and wife.

I didn't like it. My cousin did this and I blame this on the Officiant but no one had no idea wtf they were doing. He either didn't announce it or his mic wasn't working. He made the Best man hold his binder thing because for some reason he had to have his hands free. There was no announcement by the officiant afterwards or anything to conclude what they had just done so it was awkward.

This is the norm in Barbados . But I don't usually like it because the guest are just sitting like for 10-15 mins doing nothing but listening to music form the dj or a singer

This is odd... I'm in California & we had to sign our marriage license at the county clerks office about a month before the wedding. The day of, our officiant had my MOH & his BM sign as witnesses before the ceremony. I have never seen this done during the ceremony.

This is pretty common Canada, but the only weddings I've ever done with this included have been ceremonies that include, well,Canadians.

Many US states don't have the couple sign the license on the day of the wedding, and frankly, I don't like doing it with witnesses during the ceremony. It's not especially fun to watch, it's a legal document that really shouldn't be messed up in the heat of the moment...

UO; it's not really very romantic and I don't think it enhances the ceremony especially when the actual couple doesn't sign it.

It took only a couple of minutes. We had to wait for the soloist to finish her song before we went back to the altar. Everyone was told ahead of time exactly what they had to do- sign their legal name. The two of us and our MOH and BM signed along with the officiant.

I wanted to do this but we actually signed when we applied for the license so only the officiant signs it the wedding day. Seemed strange to me since I had always heard that you sign the license on the wedding day.
