Silicone vs metal wedding bands

LibraryBelle, on July 10, 2017 at 10:11 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 27

I'm testing the waters on what people think about having silicone vs metal wedding bands. I am in nursing school and my FH is a weightlifter/football coach. So, the two of us will have a good portion of our time sans metal rings. I suggested we just get silicone rings (there are some that look good) and maybe for our 10 year anniversary, splurge on metal rings). My stepmother is adamantly against this (as are a few others I've spoken to). She believes that sure, we can get the silicone rings for practical uses, but for the wedding we should absolutely have metal rings.

Opinions please.

Ya, the ring I want is $1500. And I just have a hard time coming to terms with paying that much after all the other cash we're shelling out these days. Especially considering I've heard it's not best to wear rings that can snag gloves and trap bacteria while at the hospital. Plus, with my scuba diving and FH's weighlifting and football, the rings will be off more often than they're on.

I never even knew that silicone rings were an option!

windowschick- do you happen to have a picture of your Enso ring? I'd love to see how they look on a person.

I'd get metal rings for the wedding. Do you want to look back at pictures and see silicone rings? FH is a sheet metal worker and I bought him a Qualo silicone ring for work and a metal one for everywhere else. I have some cheap ones from Amazon for the gym. They're really nice.

We will have both. My E-ring and band are platinum (we went with this over white gold because I'm a klutz and platinum, though softer than gold, doesn't show scratches as much) and his is titanium. For our honeymoon, working out, lawn work, hiking, etc. we are getting enso rings.

My husband & I both have silicone rings that I purchased off of Etsy for $20 all together. When I workout or layout and tan I wear my silicone ring.

I already have a silicon ring for work and I'm going to get some for FH. I did q bunch off amazon for like $12. But we do plan on getting metal rings for the ceremony and to wear when we're not doing abusive things to our hands.

I'm a personal trainer so I spend most of my time using my hands with rough materials. I still want to be able to wear my wedding rings while I work so I'll just have to see how that goes over time. We got engaged with tungsten rings though so if I start beating up my wedding set too badly I'll just wear my tungsten band. Tungsten might be a good idea for you if you want inexpensive metal... it doesn't scratch or bend- under extreme force or impact it can shatter though so just be aware. I got our rings for about $100 each from embr.com

I'd be REAALLLY careful with the tungsten rings in your line of work. Our local hospital has had to do finger amputations because people have closed car doors on their rings and, like you pointed out, the rings are very hard to bend... so once they bend, there's no unbending them. I was going to get FH a tungsten ring until I we found out about these worse case scenarios. With the amount of weights he lifts, I would be terrified he would lose a finger!

FH and I are doing traditional bands that we will most of the time (we just picked them out and we are so excited) but we have discussed getting silicone bands as well. We both work in professional fields and dress up on a daily basis so we both wanted more traditional wedding bands but we are also runners and love to hike and camp and we wanted rings that we could wear during our outdoor activities.

I'm getting silicone rings additional to our real ones. We're wearing them on our honeymoon since we will be in the ocean most of that week.

I'm in nursing school as well and we're getting both. Qalo rings are the best. FH got me a cute bright teal one to wear instead of my engagement ring at work. They're only 15 dollars and has lasted a while without any wear or tear!

This may be an UO - but I don't think you HAVE to have metal bands for the wedding if you don't want to. My husband was a nice band that we got him but he wears his $10 silicon ring 99.9% of the time. He's an arborist so he can't wear his metal ring. It was expensive and now we both regret spending the money on it. I usually just wear my e-ring but I'm buying an ENSO for our vacations.

Alright, it sounds like general consensus here is to have both. Something nice for those times we're able to get dressed up and a practical ring for non-picture moments. Thanks everyone for the feedback. Time to start looking for wedding bands! Smiley smile

Do whatever you want to do. It's your life and your marriage, you're not doing it for your mom or anyone else

    Get both!

my jeweler made a sweet point that she always liked precious metals for wedding bands because they are precious items. i know this isn't possible/desirable by all, but it made my sappy heart swoon a little

We got a plain silver band for DH but we both have silicone bands for work. We went with Safe Ringz because the bands are thinner than other companies have. I love them and theyre pretty great so far.

My fiancé wants a silicon ring. He works with his hands a lot. All it took for me to get on his side was looking up people losing their fingers because of their wedding rings...it's pretty gruesome.

My FH is getting a silicone ring to wear for work (bartending) and a metal one for whenever he isn't working. The silicone ones are so inexpensive maybe just go for both!
