Silk flowers in water???

Brandi ♥'s Chris, on August 10, 2011 at 3:32 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

I am considering doing my own centerpieces and will need orchids to go in the water inside the vase. I am going to order the stargazers in bulk and use real flowers for the top part. I was thinking it may not be easy to find the orchids in bulk and I mught save some money by doing silk. Does anyone know if the silk flowers will be ok in the water. They will be left over night. Thanks

    You would need to test them... some will bleed the color if in the water too long.

    Skip the orchids and put a colored filler in there? marbles or something like that? colored stones from an aquarium?

    $2 - $4 for a 2 or 5lb bag... sure if you use your pet VIP saving card, you could get for less...

    Not a bad idea...you think it will look good with stones instead?

    I think it would look good! Not sure the time of your wedding, but you could use colored submersible LED lights to give it a pink glow. Smiley smile

    I had the same idea for fake flowers in the vase. I got some purple and white fake orchids from Michaels that aren't exactly silk, but they are a soft plastic type material - they looked great and have not bled at all (been on my counter for a few weeks now) I think they look real!

    I am using dark red artificial roses submerged in water and they don't bleed at all. Test before hand just to be sure and so you don't keep stressing out. Good luck!

    For $2, give it a trial run and see... and with the flowers, it is just a try and see. I have heard of some times that bleed, so buy one and try. You might even like the rock look and it might save you in the long run.

    @ Jessica, I was thinking of doing lights, but they are kinda pricey, so I probably won't =(

    @Alicia, thanks for the info

    @Sherry, thanks for the advice. I'll buy some and do a trial run.

    AHayley, Yea, I think I'll do a trial run and see what happens. I was going to have a florist do them, but I just can't see spending all that money. We have the vases already and the florist wants to charge us $500 just to put them together. I am definately going to diy.

    There are some neat 'water dyes' that you can get at craft sites that might be interesting too if buying submersible lights aren't an option. There are a LOT of them on the website I've been visiting:

    I am having this same issue. I am using 27 inch cylinder vases with purple orchids submerged in water and also using the led lights in the bottom. I have seen latex flowers that seem like they would work but cannot find any orchids...only calla lilies bluck. Im not sure where you have been looking but you can find the submersible LEDs super cheap! Here is a link to some I have found http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Pink-Submersible-Wedding-Floralytes-LED-candle-light-/390341216229?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae22647e5 I will let you know if I find an alternative to the bleeding orchids. Smiley smile This is what I am doing:

    One more thing...Sams club is the best place I have found for bulk flowers for the stargazers you want to use! Smiley smile

    Hi, Brandi I have FINALLY figured out what I am doing with my centerpieces and I hope this helps: Although I love the look of the orchids I have come to the conclusion that the real stems are extremely expensive and the silk stems ..well, I just dont wanna take the chance of the dye bleeding and it looking completely ridiculous! I have decided to go with REAL submerged Gladiolus which are a part of the lily fam...So it would go well with your stargazers. Also, at the local grocery store..usually albertsons, they sell these with about 7-10 huge stems for about $4.99..Really cheap considering you would only use a couple in your smaller vases. Additionally, I found they LED lights called "Floralytes" on ebay for $15 bucks for a case of 12 any color. I really hope this helps! Happy Planning!!! Smiley smile
