silk flowers vs real flowers

Cyndi Lou, on February 24, 2015 at 1:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I know this debate has been done a few times. I try not to repeat posts but I'm really torn. I love real flowers. I want real flowers for my wedding.

The issue: my mom is highly allergic to flowers. She was in my house on Valentine's day and started sneezing within minutes because of the roses FH got me. I don't want her miserable at my wedding.

I always feel fake flowers look just that, fake. I'm so torn. Or reception will be outdoors so maybe it wont be so bad? And I'm doing a brooch bouquet so there is that.

The silk flowers these days can look very real, some look so real that you don't know they aren't until you touch them. You can do what I did, I spent $1,300 on real flowers but it wasn't enough to get the garden look I wanted, so I mixed in some silk ones where people wouldn't be near enough to touch them. Take a look at the silk ones to use indoors and save the real ones for outside away from where your mother will be sitting. Good luck and Best wishes !

Having your mom sneezing throughout your ceremony and reception is sure to be distracting. Especially during the ceremony. Do you have to use flowers? There are so many other things you can do for table arrangements and decorations that can look very elegant. But there are some really good silk flowers out there where you would never tell if you are really wanting flowers. I would stay away from real flowers if your mom is allergic, you don't want video or a bunch of pictures where your mom is sneezing.

Have you looked into paper flowers? I've seen some really realistic crepe paper flowers Smiley smile Thinking of using them for mine since roses are apparently expensive, and roses are my fave flower so I want to have them for my bouquet. I haven't looked into silk flowers myself, is there a particular flower you have in mind? A local craft store may have some of those "real to touch" (I think that's what they are called) flowers that look AND feel like the real thing (I've seen Callow Lillies like this and I couldn't tell they were fake at all!! they were made of some sort of foam like material)

If you cant do real flowers, think of it positively. We're doing fake flowers and this was ultimately decided after we fell in love with our caterers non floral rentable centerpieces. So, the BM's and I get fake bouquets, so what? who will even notice, or care? as long as they aren't in the guests eyes like TOUCH ME (such as center pieces) i don't see the harm in it. I think an good alternative could be paper flowers. I ordered 11 bouquets, 13 boutonnieres, and 3 corsages from floral.com and i couldn't have been happier with the quality! the best part is you can resell or keep them forever!

Search for latex flowers. They feel like rubber but look real in person. I think we will end up doing latex Calla Lillies because then I don't have to worry about them wilting or making it to me in time and we can make everything months before they are needed. Then we can sell the flowers afterwards or keep them for decorations in the house. There are poor quality fakes out there but there are also good quality ones. I found mine on ebay and they run just about $1 per stem. Some of the roses even have leaves on their stems so they look very real. Flowers aren't a huge importance to me, so that's why fake are an option.

For me real flowers are a must have! But some don't care. It was just very important to me. I guess you have to decide how important it is to you.

These are the ones I bought:

I bought a lesser amount first, to see them in person. They look to be the same quality as that Budget Bride website. I saw their Plum Calla Lily $150 package and I really like that bouquet so maybe I'll switch to make a bouquet match that!

Flowers weren't and aren't important to me considering all the headache one will have to go through for them. For one, people pay hella money for something that will die in less than a week! I kept it simple for the wedding and used silk flowers that way it's one less thing for me or anybody else to worry about.

I'm really leaning towards fake flowers. I can't justify spending so much money on something that is going to die. Unfortunately, I had a dream the other night that all of the bouquets were falling apart as we were walking down the aisle cause they weren't real. God help me lol

I'm allergic to a lot of things too so I understand wanting to avoid sneezing throughout the ceremony and reception.

It goes with my style and color, but FH and I are using several potted plants at our wedding to avoid the sniffles. Also, my bouquet is heavier on the berries and greenery with very little flowers to help me out. So, don't limit yourself to flowers. Branches, berries, and other non blooming plants might provide you with what you want while also not sending your mom into an allergy attack.
