Silk or fluffy BM robes?

Jasmine, on January 29, 2015 at 11:18 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

I've been complaining that I have nothing to make with mnew sewing machine, and also been complaining about the cost of getting robes for my five BM's... So the FH said to me before leaving for work "Make them". Two birds one stone I guess LOL! So this weekend I'm off to the store to grab some fabric and get sewing, I'll post results and probably frustrations lol.

Now the question is, do I make them fluffly and soft, or light silk ones? It will be in August when they're wearing them so I'm not sure if I want them all sweating while getting ready lol! I'm also unsure about colours. Our wedding colours are Navy and light pinks, so I was thinking maybe navy for all of the BM and a pink one for me? Or other way around?

Opinions?? Smiley smile

I would do light silk because it's in august but that material is hard to sew. I like the navy and one pink idea. It will make you stand out more. Smiley smile

Normally I don't care for the robes idea (you may not even have time to be photographed in them for example) but in this case I think it would be cool! I would go for the silky ones.

I went with what was on sale at The Knot Shop. If you subscribe to their sales you could catch a great deal like I did. They (silky) were only $20 personalized.

I think silk, but the fabric will definitely be harder to work with. Also I'll warn you fabric isn't always cheap. I make a lot of my own clothes and I find that often I spend as much on fabric and materials as I would have to buy ready to wear. But I enjoy seeing, so I don't care about not saving money.

@Natalie I can't think of a single person in my family who doesn't sew. Everyone does something lol. I grew up sewing and have had a whopping 13 sewing machines now lol.

I also have a fabric store that's already relatively cheaper than most, and they give you an extra 10% discount on your entire purchase with a membership card.

I have also worked with silk before! For once I actually know what I doing thank goodness LOL

I say neither! I didn't even think of sewing them myself (that'll probably save me $100 on buying them) I was planning on getting some light cotton ones (like from ComfyClothing on etsy) I've been relearning to sew (haven't done so since I was about 10, and I'm proud of how quickly I'm picking it back up!)

Okay, not $100, unless I get a super sale on fabrics.... but it also seems more personal if I sew them

Silky. this should be a luxery, not a bathrobe they'd buy for themselves for practical reasons

And that is exactly the reason why I would go with fluffy. I want them to have something that they can use afterwards. I wouldn't wear a silky one, but a fluffy bathrobe, yes, I would wear it again.

Since they're unpractical for me, I'll do the same thing with sweat pans and jackets Smiley smile

Silk because it isn't a winter wedding. Have you thought of a waffle like material too?

Personally, if your gonna give me a robe, I would want a cotton or fluffy material because I'd be more likely to actually use it again. A silk robe would like end up in back in my closet. also I think cotton would still be light enough and breathable enough for August, plus easier to work with (though it doesn't sound like that's an issue for you lol). Also a quality cotton, especially a waffle cone style or something like that, I think could still count as luxurious.

@Jasmine because you said it was a new sewing machine I thought you might be new to sewing. You are so lucky you have a cheap fabric store near you, all the ones near me are sooo expensive. I would go with silky since it is summer.

My home town is all more pricey places with fabric too! I'm so happy the town I'm in now has this little store. REALLY lucked there!

I originally wanted to get silky robes for my maid of honor and myself (I don't have any bridesmaids) but I started thinking they don't seem like they would be very practical? I don't think we would even be wearing them very long. I honestly don't think my MOH would even wear it after the wedding. I love it for myself though. I would wear it afterwards. My FH thinks the cotton robe I have now is unattractive. (Their not supposed to be attractive!? lol) I thought maybe a silky one would have a sexiness to it?

I vote for fluffy, cuz its a bunch of girls sitting around make up less and trying tostay comfortable until the last minute. If it cotton youll not deal with perspiration. Lets face it, us girlsnlove our buggley robes. Its the guys who like the silkystuff that clings to you, makes you sweat (and it shows) and that ou... well... (nip out" in due to air conditioning. Lol Think of those big fluffy cotton ones the give you at luxury hotels...ahhh..comfort at its best! Lol. And although i think purchasing bm ropes is typically a waste of funds, i would be honored to receove one that you personally made! How about pink, with Navy blue embroidered monogram (their initials not yours of course) . Bet your mil would love one too!

I vote silk (or really just non-fluffy!)

While fluffy is definitely more likely to be used after the wedding - you always run the risk of it creating static in hair before or after girls get their hair done! Something silky or more waffle-like will be more practical for getting ready to avoid static and tangles.

I think silky or satin robes are super cute, but some jersey knit robes are more comfortable and I would be more likely to wear that after the fact.

One thing to consider, and I hope this story does not sound rude or harsh... I just experienced it so definitely want others to be mindful. My wedding party was 5 girls of all different shapes and sizes. One of my BMs was a size 22, so I got her an XXL robe. Well because the silky robe does not have any "give" at all, it did not fit. So the wedding day when all my BMs were giddy and wearing their robes I had just given then, I felt terrible because this friend was unable to fit into hers. So if you do have any friends who are beautiful and curvy- just think about maybe doing a fabric other than silk or satin!

I love fluffy robes, but my wedding was also in August so I went with thin silk. A white one that said bride on the back for me and a purple one for the girls. I like your idea of you having light pink and them having navy. Good luck!

I would do silky or a jersey knit. Actually, depending on how good you are at sewing, jersey might be a safer choice (silky isn't very forgiving!)
