Silverware Faux Pas

Morgan, on May 24, 2019 at 8:50 PM Posted in Registry 0 6
We picked this amazing Kate Spade silverware our and I love it. I went to look at the store and make sure I got the right amounts of stuff tonight and it was $70 per place setting before tax. That is unreasonable to pay or to ask anyone to pay. I want something minimal and modern and something that is a medium weight utensil. Please help! Our shower invites went out and I'd like to have it on there. Thanks!!!

We got silverware from Crate & Barrel and it was $40 per place setting which is more reasonable. But in my opinion I would splurge on silverware. I had a friend who just registered for Target silverware because it was cheaper and she wanted to be conscious of guest’s budgets. A year later she was already replacing it because it was so cheap. So I say register for the silverware you want and that will last you many years.

I agree with the PP you should register for nice silverware that will last but I also think $70 per place setting is pretty high and you have to think about whether you will actually receive very many place settings as gifts at this price and if you don’t receive enough do you want to spend the money to buy the rest? If you don’t mind buying the rest then I’d say register for what you want but you kind of need silverware and you’ll want it all to match. Oneida makes nice silverware that’s reasonable! We didn’t register for any and bought it at Costco bc you can get large sets all together for a cheaper. Research the “18/10” number on it to tell how nice it is!

We went with the Mikasa Lucia silverware pattern. So far we've been happy with it. It's very simple, and stacks nicely in the drawer which was important to me because I like things to stack nicely lol. It was about $20/place setting, so very reasonable.

It's ok to register for items you want, no matter the cost. The only problem with silverware is, if you don't get the quantity sets you want, will you be willing to fork out the $70/setting for 4 sets, maybe more?

As others have said, there is the concern that you may get gifted a few sets and have to match the rest.

That said, as long as you have items at different price points, I don't think there's anything wrong with putting a few expensive items on there that you love. No one is obligated to buy you anything, and if they think the expensive silverware set is excessive, they can get something else, or nothing at all.

I originally didn't want to register at all because we already live together and have a fair amount of stuff, but my mother suggested we do and put some "upgrade" items on there. We put two very expensive items on the list - a vacuum and patio set. We didn't really expect anyone to buy them - and my FH grandparents bought us the vacuum (which is amazing and my house is so much cleaner than it ever was before!)

Take a look at Crate & Barrel, we registered for some really nice stuff from there, and it was $40/place setting. We haven't used it yet, but it feels solid and they have a good reputation.

Mine are from walmart and they are nice in my book, heavy and not too light. Each pack is $20. So I asked for 3 packs for service of 12. I know Target has nice ones too! You can always go into the store to look. I really didn't like any at BB&B. I don't agree with bougie silverware either unless you're getting fine china. Just FYI my mom doesn't buy fancy silverware and her originals have lasted all my 26 years and then some since my parents got married. She only had to buy more because my brother kept losing them at work and not bringing them home lol
