Simple Wedding Cake

sarah, on October 26, 2017 at 12:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I am wondering if anyone knows of a bakery in the Tampa/Sarasota area where I can get a wedding cake for about $3 per slice? I am not a fan on fondant, just want a basic cake and I will add fresh flowers. Seems like all the ones I have called have the same price for fondant and highly decorated, as well as just basic. I also though about having a non wedding cake bakery make one, is that silly?

Check with Costco or sams club if you have one in your area.. they have basic cakes and they are soo good I priced a 3 tier cake for 69$ I went with cupcakes instead so I didn't go with them but they do have good options

If you don't mind not having the big wedding cake you could do a small cake, from a non-wedding cake bakery, and sheet cakes from Costco/ Publix, or anywhere else. When you order the small cake don't say it's for a wedding & then add your topper or fresh flowers.

We're on the opposite coast, so don't have any specific suggestions, but keep looking. We found cakes ranging from $3-$8 a slice. We found the best pricing (and cake & frosting my daughter LIKES best) from cupcake bakeries who also do wedding cakes. She'll be getting a lovely 3-layer cake with a simple buttercream design frosting for about $3.25 a slice, that serves 100; delivered, it will be well under $400. Comparison shopping pays off. Those are good ideas, I would like a 3 tier cake, however it probably would be for about 80 people. Do most people eat the cake? Should I order it for 80 people or less? What is the usual?

I would order it for the amount of guests you are expecting. I would not order less.

At MOB, that is very reasonable. I have been getting quotes for 5.25 per slice, for basic naked cakes. I can see that price if I have elaborate fondant and fondant flowers ext...but not naked.

Ah Kate, I see. Ok, should I suggest buttercream instead? Would that be easier?

Yes! I agree with Kate. While it seems like "naked" should be cheaper, I read it actually takes a fair amount of skill to do it so it's not dried out, and that might make it more expensive. Also, yes on the buttercream. Search different bakeries. We used the vendor tabs on WW, Knot, and looked on Yelp. The bakeries specializing in wedding cakes tended to be very expensive -- even for a simple buttercream frosted cake. Like I mentioned, we tended to see the less expensive options at bakeries that specialize in cupcakes, but also do wedding cakes. For design, a "smooth" or "spatula" finish in buttercream tends to be among the least expensive designs. The shop we ended up going with was willing to customize the consistency of the buttercream to my daughter's tastes (some go with more of a soft mousse consistency which she really does not like; a small shop might be more willing to work with you on your desires). Some of your bigger grocery stores may offer wedding cakes at a competitive price, too. (We're not local to you, but I see a lot of great comments about Publix on these forums....) Good luck!
