Sister Wants To Have Wedding On My Birthday Weekend

Do I have the right to be upset if my little sister wants to have her wedding on the weekend of my 35th birthday? My birthday would be on the day of her rehearsal and I'm feeling frustrated that I would be required to cater to her on my birthday and hang out with her friends, etc. It's also the first time my birthday falls on a weekend in 5 years. She is getting married at her fiance's family ranch and could have chosen ANY weekend in the summer, but instead, she chose my birthday weekend. It's a catch 22, because if I try to celebrate my birthday in any way, people will get upset at me for "taking away from the bride." I'm single, it's my 5-years younger sister getting married, and I am not allowed to bring a date. Thoughts?

Sounds like what you are really upset about is that your sister is getting married, while you are still single. I know that sucks and I am sure it is hard to be the older sister watching the younger sister get married. I totally sympathize with that. It sucks when it seems like other peoples personal lives are moving ahead when yours isn't.

That being said, it doesn't really seem like that big of a deal that it is on your bday weekend. Has she said WHY you cant bring a date?

This was the exact situation for me and my sister. Her birthday was the day before my wedding (the rehearsal dinner). That particular weekend was picked because it was the one we could find free where the church, reception venue, and all the bridal party was available. I asked my sister and she said that was fine with her - it would be more celebrating that she usually does on her birthday. I did have a bridal lunch that day and we got a birthday cake for her just to make it a little special. I'm of the opinion that when you are over the age of 21 birthdays are not that big of a deal with the exception of a couple of milestones (40, 50, etc...). I'm 34, she's 37.

I will say that birthdays are a much bigger deal to my husbands family. They celebrate with multiple dinners, his brother and SIL do out of town weekends, and activities are arranged to not interfere with birthdays (ie we are leaving for vacation on Sunday instead of Saturday because his mamaws birthday is Saturday). So if your family is like that, I kind of get you being upset - but then again I can't figure out why birthdays are such a big deal for them and struggle with that.

You're 35 and you are throwing this little tantrum over celebrating a 35th birthday? 35? Not even something of significance like 16, 18 or 21? My goodness. Just be happy for your sister and get over yourself!

Ya know what, come to think of it, MY 26th birthday is on a Saturday this year. Clearly, that is a once in a lifetime event and you know what? The city two cities over is having a festival that day! I mean, how rude! I am going to write them a letter and demand they cancel the event, because it says that I can't bring my dog into the VIP area we are going to. And it's MY birthday, so I obviously am the only person in the world that matters.

Thanks, OP, for bringing it to my attention of this horrific etiquette on the behalf of the city near me. I will call them to have them cancel their event immediately.

    I'm calling it... troll.

On the troll scale, you did it too late on a Sunday night and disappeared too quickly, so I'm rating you a 5. lol

Get over it! Celebrate your birthday at her wedding! You will have other birthdays..her wedding is only once!

I am getting the impression there may be some "rivalry". Why won't she let you bring a date to the wedding? I find that puzzling myself....

This conversation should die, and I'm totally in the minority here, AND this is probably a troll... but yes - people over 30 do celebrate their birthdays. My favorite way to celebrate my birthday is a quiet dinner with my husband and then go to the movies or the theatre. And spend the rest of the day doing what I want. Usually something quiet. I'm not a big fan of big birthday celebrations for myself, but it's still the one day a year I can claim as mine!

I'm going to a wedding that's happening on my birthday (my 37th birthday). I'm going, because I like the couple, but I'm not staying long because I want to celebrate my birthday my way. I don't think it's such a shocker or unreasonable that she feels put out (if she is indeed a troll).

I have to agree with the other ladies here... you are being selfish. If your sister was planning her wedding the same day as your wedding, then yes you can be upset. But a birthday is just a birthday. I know 35 is a milestone number, but you have most of the day to celebrate and then just the rehersal you have to spend with your sister and her friends. That's not too bad.

Celebrating your birthday a different day, like a week before, is perfectly acceptable.
