Size 12 to Size 6 in 9 months?

Lydia, on July 9, 2012 at 5:16 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 20

So, I need to know a few things. Is it totally unrealistic to try to drop 6 sizes in less than 9 months? I went from a size 6 to size 12 in nine months. haha. Also, when should I start alterations? how many months before the wedding? Thanks for all the help, people! Smiley smile

I don't think it's completely unrealistic but you will have to be consistant. If you diet and exercise and portion control you should totally be able to lose the weight in 9 months. I'm trying to drop 20 pounds in 3 months...and I think that is unrealistic so I'm aiming for 10 pounds instead. With alterations I am bringing mine in 6 weeks before my wedding. But I also got my dress at a boutique where they have a seamstress there so she will have it done in a week. Then I have to stay the same weight for 5 weeks! Not sure if I can do that! Good luck!

Hmmmmm......it might be doable. One dress size on average equals 10 pounds, so you are looking at 60 pounds or so. Which is rounded off to about 2 pounds a week. It can be done, but at the same time weight loss is always an iffy thing. I wouldn't say it's totally unrealistic, but I would also caution to have a backup plan just in case you don't lose all of it.

It is totally realistic! But like Shaina said, you need to stay consistent and keep your will power strong! If you cut 500 calories a day (either by diet or exercise) you can easily lose 1 pound per week. If you want to, you can increase it from there; most people can lose between 1-3 pounds per week and be able to keep it off as long as healthy portions are under control (don't starve yourself, but don't over do it either) and you have a regular exercise routine.

By regular, i mean a steady 4-5 days per week. Change up your work out constantly to keep your muscles guessing, and your metabolism boosted.

And lean muscle burns fat, so don't be afraid of adding weight training to your work out Smiley smile

    Hope that helps!!

I'll put it this way, I've talked to a lot of doctors and dietitions about weight loss and they all say that 1-2 pounds per week is the healthy and realistic goal for most people, so that would be anywhere from 36 to 72 pounds in 9 months. My only suggestion is DON'T try and lose more than that because your skin will not have the time to 'snap' back and there is nothing worse than losing a lot of weight only to have huge jiggly skin folds. Other than that, 1-2 pounds per week is easy if you pace yourself. The obvious, more water, less sugary juices and sodas, green tea and coffee are great, just watch the cream and sugar. More fruits and veggies, lean protein, whole grains, cut down on starches (corn, potatoes, white rice, white bread). Eat 5 small meals a day and try for 15-30 minutes of exercise everyday or 45-60 minutes 4-5 times per week. Sparkpeople is a great free tool as well. Good Luck, you can do it.

WHOOOA!! Losing 60 pounds would put me at like... 100 pounds. Yeahhhh. Not gonna do that. I am 5'10". I just read on TLC.com that it's realistic to lose 2 pounds a week. I think I might do that for a couple of months until I am at the size I want to be, and then just maintain it. Smiley tongue

Were you ever a size 6? If so, how much did you weigh then? 145?

Also, wedding dress sizes are WAY different than street size.

You are thinking about that used dress, right?

FIRST - send the seller a message. Find out how tall she was in heels. It might be too short for you. Then ask her what her measurements were when she wore the dress. Her seamstress should have it on file. OR if she still fits in the dress, she can tell you her current measurements.

If the dress is Long enough, then you just need to see how many inches you need to lose to be the same or smaller than the original owner. You can bring a dress in but hard to take it out if it was already altered. Also, you can't Add length.

~ you can do it~ just track your INCHES, not lbs!

    good luck

Well that dress is hemmed to fit a 5'5" woman. So, it wouldn't work. But that's a good point about inches, not pounds. That's exactly what I want to do. Smiley smile

I went from a size 12 to a size 8 in 2.5 months (cut out soda and fried foods), so I am sure you can do it in 9! Just make sure you are consistent, eat right, get good rest, and of course exercise.

In order to get into a size 6, the number on the scale is not as important as the way the weight is distributed.

When I weighed 125, I wore an 8 or 10 (depending upon the article of clothing.) Then, I started working out, like crazy. My weight went to 140, but I dropped to a size 6, because my weight gain was muscle weight.

I need to start working out like that, again.

No it's not unrealistic. You just have to real with yourself and get on a SERIOUS eating habit change and get in some serious exercise! I recommend doing the Insanity workout and running. Eating 5 small meals a day, no carbs, no soda, no fried foods, get 8 hours of sleep at night, take vitamins, drink meal replacement smoothies and protein shakes, and lean protein. Losing weight is 85% diet and 15% exercise. I dropped 84lbs since December 2011 and I'm still losing. I know of what I speak. Smiley smile It's very hard and you'll want to curse many times but if you push yourself you can do it. It's a total life change. Dig Deeper!

    Good luck!!

Agree with Yardiegirl 100% regarding a need to change your eating habits. I am basically doing the same thing and have dropped a considerable amount of weight since February and what I do is 85% diet and 15% exercise. Since shedding the pounds it has made me want to be more active as a result so I am doing hiking and running 5K races and all that but that mostly just makes me feel good. Cutting carbs, taking vitamins, getting enough sleep and having one cheat day a week keeps me sane and put me at a normal BMI before I am even ready to purchase my wedding gown. Discipline is key.

I would meet with a dietitian and personal trainer. Ask them what the best way to do it is so you don't hit your plateau. Have them write up a plan for you based on your body type.

If you lose to fast or yo yo you could really damage your heart and esophagus because that is a drastic change. It's not unrealistic but be safe too!

To add to what Hayley said, my wedding dress was a size 6. I am 5'2" and 125lbs. I'm normally a street size 3/4 so yeah you would most likely really have to drop down to a size 2 to 4 depending on the dress' brand to fit a 6 in wedding dress size. Just FYI.

Are you sure you want to put that much pressure on yourself leading up to your wedding? I mean, try to lose weight, sure....but with everything else going on, I'm not sure you should be looking for that much weight gone in that time frame. Do your best, cut yourself some breaks, and dress the body you have to it's best.

You should join a weight loss programs. I did for 60 bucks for 3 months. This way you have a little bit of help. I want to lose 40 lbs by January. In January I am going to look for a dress and try to stay that size. Good luck!

Well, really you're just talking about losing 3 sizes - from a 12, down to a 10 to an 8 to a 6. I think pounds and inches are tough to guesstimate b/c everyone's body is so different. Like me and Pan for example, have very similar height and weights but my dress was a size 8 and I would guess we might be a different shape?

If you went up from a 6 to a 12 in nine months, I guess I would just try to figure out what was happening and address that. Did something change in your work schedule, or did your sleep schedule change, or was there a medical reason? Maybe there's something you can do to reverse it. Maybe a RD and trainer would be a good idea.

It is not unrealistic but you will definitely need to eat the right foods and exercise quite a bit. The best thing is to do small snacks throughout the day never skip breakfast and eat a breakfast in the morning that will have high protein. Have natural sugars that are not high glycemic index because spikes in sugar make you crave more simple sugars. I like mapmyrun.com put your weight in and it will tell how much fat carbs and protein you should be eating. It is amazing when you track the food how you realize you are not getting the food your body needs. Also if you have an android or iPhone you can run outside and it will keep track of miles and calories burned!!! Another high burning exercise Zumba! If you are running or biking i recommend at least 1-2 days of a high intensity interval training. Good luck!!!!

By the way you want to eat carbs but you want to eat complex carbs to reduce the cravings. Your brain needs carbs to think and your body needs them to work especially if you are going to be doing cardio exercises! If you dont eat carbs your body will become hypoglycemic ( low blood sugar). If this is what you are doing please stop if you do feel shaky and faint make sure you eat or drink something fast acting sugar such as oranges or some sort of orange juice or apple juice. A trainer and nutritionist will be best to oversee you progress.

Sounds like a tough one. It's a life style changing decision. It will be hard at first, but your body will get used to it, then it becomes just something that you do. Good luck!!
