Size up for wedding band or same size?

Kimberly, on July 23, 2019 at 1:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 36

When shopping for your wedding band did you stay true to your ring size of your engagement ring or did you size up/down at all? My ring finger size is 3.5 but for my engagement ring the jeweler suggested going to 3.75 which fits fine. Its fits comfortably - snug during times of the day and looser during other times but never loose enough where it would ever come out of my finger.

When we go shopping for wedding bands should I stick to the same ring size as my engagement ring or should I size down? Or should I go up to 4 - we do plan on starting a family some day and i'm not sure if this is true but after being pregnant and having kids do your fingers stay the swollen size or does it revert back to how you were?

I would let the jeweler make that call because they will know best. My finger is a bit more narrow as it goes closer to the base of my finger so I wish I went a tad bit smaller than my engagement ring because it spins a bit. Good luck.

My engagement ring fits perfect alone but when i have my band on then they feel too tight. So once we get closer to the wedding, I'm going to take my rings to get them sized up. Because they are really uncomfortable together. Smiley sad

I wonder though if you decide to have kids if that will change your finger size? I've heard women's shoe size can go up a size and stay that way!

Hmm that's interesting to know. With my engagement ring I feel like we could have almost sized down a little so maybe the band will give me the perfect fit.

Your fingers will definitely change with any weight gain or loss.

I sized up on my bands, and actually had my e-ring sized up as well. My jeweler told me that as I add bands, they tend to get tighter on your finger, even if they would fit comfortably alone. Now, I have a bumper (so 1 band on top, on on the bottom). I just got them back from being soldered and I am so glad I went up a quarter size!

I would let the jeweler size you, but typically bands are TTS. Engagement rings tend to be a little bigger because they are not a complete round, like bands. They are slightly oval shaped at the top to account for the extra weight of the diamond. So you will probably need a 3.5 size band. But again, I would pick out the band you want and have the jeweler size you before order it.

Good to know! I never really changed much in weight but then again I never really had a ring on my finger for that long to really know the difference

I didn't know that! I think it's safe to size up as long as it's not too loose to begin with

Thanks for the solid advice! We did go a size up for the engagement ring per the jeweler's advice but you're right he might suggest 3.5 for the band.

I had to go down .25 size when we ordered my band. The same size was way too big, but my engagement ring fits me perfectly. That was the explanation the jeweler gave me, which made sense once I thought about it.

My mother changed ring sizes at different times, when she first got married, after getting pregnant, and then went up and down with weight. It was never more than half a size so she used ring sizers as needed. Our friend is a jeweler and mentioned to her resizing too many times can damage the ring so my dad bought her a new one at about ten years, my sister and I helped pick it. Gold and silver are softer metals too so after a lot of years you might notice a difference as well.
I'd say have it a little loose for sure but overall you can't predict things like how a pregnancy will go ect, you'll just have to address those situations as they come.

This makes sense. I'll keep this in mind when we go shopping for the wedding bands

Very true, everyone just has to adapt to every situation. I've actually heard the same thing about resizing too many times that's why I'd rather be sure now and pick a size I can work with.

Both of mine are the same size. My e-ring by itself is about a quarter size too big, but it fits better with my wedding band.

My rings are the same size - in the winter they're a little loose and in the summer they're sometimes a tad snug. I would speak to your jeweler.

My e ring is a 4. I decided on two bands the bottom is a 4.5 and the top a 4.25 because when they sit all together they become quite snug!! It definitely depends on how thick your band is/bands are going to be and how you want the ring to feel.

When having the jeweler size you, be careful the time of day you go and what season you go. As others have stated, your hands shrink in the winter/cold and swell in the summer/heat. The same goes for time of day. your hands are naturally swollen first thing in the morning and late at night. the perfect time to go is mid-afternoon, like 3 or 4 p.m. (I've been bowling since high school, and the same concept applies because they have to drill the holes in your ball based on your finger size.)

Thanks for the advice on when to go see the jeweler! I'll keep that in mind. I find that I'm the opposite, it seems during the summer my ring feels more loose than it did a couple of months ago.

You're welcome! There are lots of reasons your ring could fit looser now - lost weight, you're not ingesting as much sodium, etc.

Side note - I've also noticed that my rings fits tighter when I'm on my period, so that's something else to keep in mind when going to the jeweler!
