Skipping the DJ?

Future Mrs. H STL, on July 2, 2015 at 2:02 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 22

Are any brides skipping the DJ for your wedding ceremony and reception? We are having an afternoon wedding and an afternoon reception and trust me I know how important having a DJ is for the flow of the event. But I'm curious for brides that are on a budget and skipping this aspect, are you having music at all? Tell me about your wedding without a DJ. Thanks for any input Smiley smile

We skipped the DJ, not for financial reasons but because we knew our crowd would not dance. So no first dance, no father/daughter, etc it was awesome. This didn't affect the flow and it didn't make the wedding boring. Everyone still had a great time socializing and playing some games.

We are thinking about skipping it, but we are not sure what the sound system at the venue is like. I really would like to just have a laptop with a playlist, but I'm not sure if that's possible.

I know someone who made their own playlist and provided the music, just hired the MC and equipment...it was like $400 which is much less than a full service DJ.

We are skipping the DJ because we are having a small beach wedding and no room for one really. We will be using Spotify/Pandora, making playlist for each detailed dances and times, and will use the surround sound system at our venue. I definitely think it can be done!

I was at a wedding last year that didn't have a DJ. Instead they had an Ipod playing at the reception. There wasn't dancing at this wedding reception so not having a DJ really didn't make a difference at all.

If you have someone you trust you can put in charge of the Ipod, you could probably get away without a DJ at the reception (even if you have dancing). As long as they know how to work it and when you want songs played etc. It's been done before, just a matter of what you are comfortable with.

My best friend skipped it, and it was fine - it was a low-key ceremony.

We used my iPod after our band finished, and it was fine, also.

I'm skipping as well. As for most of the girls that said they skipped, I know my crowd. It will only be about 50-60 people. We are having it at a small Inn and there isn't Much room for dancing. I am still going to have the 3 traditional dances. We are having a piano player come and he will play for the night. We will switch it to a playlist as well, so he can eat and take a break. But majority will just be live music.

We're skipping the DJ, also because we're not having dancing. We are having a friend MC, so there will still be structure.

We set up our own equipment. But we had a band for the cocktail hour and during dinner at the reception. Then we used a playlist for the dancing portion.

We skipped the DJ, but we wedding was just a few hours at the venue with ceremony and then everyone having some cake and drink - we then went out for dinner and after party.

though we didn't' have a actual DJ, we had music from my laptop that we had chosen and all was good. Smiley smile

We're skipping. Our venue has a great sound system built in and we will be using Spotify. I would be skeptical, but one of my BMs did it at her wedding last year and it worked great. They saved a fortune, everyone still danced and had a great time, and they even asked guests on the RSVP cards for song requests so that people could still give input.

We plan to make a playlist for cocktail hour and dinner, then do songs for the first dance, mother/son, father/daughter, and then a second dancing playlist. A friend will MC.

Rachel that's exactly what I'm thinking. Our venue has found built in too, I only started considering a DJ to help w the flow of the event but my BM said she could MC. I'm still on the fence but everyone's comments are helping!!

I had thought about skipping the dj to save money and just going with Pandora or something. Our wedding will only be about 75 people, and at least half of them I don't think will dance. Everyone told me what a bad idea it was, and how it would ruin the wedding, etc... Our venue does not have any built in sound system, so we would have had to rent speakers and things like that. I am happy that we found what I think will be a good dj at a slightly more reasonable price. When I started looking, the cheapest dj in my area was $1,400! It was cheaper to go outside of our area and pay the extra travel fee. Now I am questioning if we could have gotten away with skipping it all together...

Due to space issues, we are limited to 42 people max including vendors were are skipping the DJ and will have an Ipod / laptop with various playlists to choose from. Our crowd is not a very dancey group anyway so it is fine. we are more a sit around a table and drink crew....which is what we planned for.

We will have games, cards against humanity, jenga, etc. and there will be music, but no prescribed dance portion of the evening

Our group is all about dancing so we put extra money into our dj budget...if your guests don't like to dance it might be wasted money...

No DJ for me... I'm just a little tired of them, and we have an older crowd. I think I'll be hiring a talented local musician, just a guy & a guitar, so we can still do some of the "official" dances and then he can play instrumental during dinner.........

Fella and I (and three of our guests) are djs, so we're not hiring one. We're using the equipment we have and putting together a fun playlist.

Ours is outdoors, no dancing, but we wanted some fun, upbeat music playing during dinner, and while people decorate their guest book pages.

We're also going to play "The Rains of Castamere" to freak out the GoT fans. Smiley winking

When we moved our date up and decided to use our church it became a space issue. I could gut the guest list (Not Happeneing), I could cut the barista or the DJ. So the DJ got cut. We hired my FH's old guitar instructor to play for the ceremony. We will not be dancing so we are downloading Christmas music onto one of our computers and hooking it up to an amp and letting it cycle through. It will be fine. There was no way I was cutting my barista. Our wedding is at 2pm so we should be fine with what we are doing.

We're having an early afternoon wedding without dancing. We will be using an Ipod with a couple bluetooth speakers
