Sky Lanterns for a "Send Off"?

SarahB, on October 8, 2017 at 3:22 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10

My FH and I are having a destination wedding, and are going to stay in the area we get married at for a couple of days before we leave for the honeymoon. We still want to do something fun at the end of the night in place of a send off, though!

I found a really great deal on non-flammable, wire-free, biodegradable sky lanterns online. We were thinking of heading outside at the end of the night, having everyone write some sort of marriage wish to us on a lantern, then lighting 'em up and releasing them together.

Has anyone had experiences with sky lanterns outside? Do they work well? Is this even a good idea?? Thank you in advance!

P.S. I checked with the venue and local Fire Marshal if sky lanterns are allowed, and they are!

Whether or not these are wire free and biodegradable, these are still terrible for the environment. In particular, once they land animals can potentially eat them and really suffer.

I agree that these look lovely but unfortunately they cause a lot of problems

My sister attempted to do a lantern send off for her wedding last summer, while I'm unsure of the exact type we could not make it work, out of 200 guests we got three up into the air, about 20 of them seemed to be ready to float away then when they were released they hovered for a few feet and settled unto the ground where they lit entirely on fire, making people stomp on them to put them out. After one of the three fliers floated into a tree and scared us all into thinking it would light the tree on fire (although it had rained earlier so there really wasn't a danger of that) we all gave up. It truly may have just been us being incompetent, but that is my experience with sky lanterns.

They can be beautiful during the ceremony but you have to light it several minutes before you'd want it to float away to build up the air to float. Just requires planning for the perfect time.

Agree with PPs - even the biodegradable type have been linked to animal deaths and fires. Not a good way to start your married life.

This is a terrible idea for the reasons PP stated. Hard pass.

Thanks for the input everyone! Animal safety/health was something I considered, but couldn't find a whole lot of information on when I researched effects of the lanterns. I knew the WW community would give me all the information I need though! Thanks all Smiley smile
